Dear fellow Democrats,
I'm not a big shot in the Democratic Party by any means. I'm a grassroots activist who has been lucky enough to earn the support of my members and serve as Chair of the Grand Traverse Democratic Party for the last eight years.
The Grand Traverse Dems - like County Party organizations throughout Michigan - have worked our tails off every election cycle to turn out Democrats for our candidates up and down the ticket.
Each cycle, Mark Brewer has given us the tools and resources we need to win. He's given us free access to online voter files; he's trained our Party members; he's assisted with candidate recruitment and helped us win elections at the local level to build a farm team - and he's always been there to answer the tough questions that nobody else seems to know.
We work hard to turn out voters and we have been given the tools we need to make that happen.
So when people don't vote, I'm disappointed.
Mark's opponent has a history of not voting. He has regularly ignored voting in local elections for municipal offices and has voted only once over the past decade in a school election. He even skipped the 2010 general election. You can read this for yourself in an article in The Oakland Press.
Some may say it's negative to point out a candidate's voting record. As a matter of fact, it's the first thing we ask candidates when they decide to run for office and it's the first thing we look at to attack our Republican opponents. I think it's a basic piece of information about a candidate we should know before we cast our ballot for MDP Chair and I appreciate getting all the facts before making a decision. Voting and the ability to communicate the importance of voting is a central part of the job. There's nothing negative about full disclosure.
Leading by example means something to me - and that starts with the most basic part of the Democratic process: VOTING.
I appreciate your time and consideration in reading this. I look forward to seeing you Saturday at the State Convention at Cobo Center in Detroit. And most importantly, I look forward to continuing to work with you to take the fight to Republicans.
