Dear Friends,
I want to thank you for the dialogue we've had over the last several weeks about the future of the Michigan Democratic Party. I know that not all of these conversations have been easy, but I do believe this process will make us an even better and stronger MDP.
As I travel around the state campaigning, I hear your concerns. I appreciate your input and I know I can make improvements to our structure. I share your concern about the losses we have taken at the state legislative level as well as state-wide races. I promise to continue to work hard every day to address these issues.
As I have mentioned on the campaign trail, redistricting reform is one of my top priorities. Many of our good Democratic candidates are running in GOP-drawn gerrymandered districts. My opponent, for example, ran an outstanding campaign for state house in 2012 but came up short in large part due to the district lines. We must address this issue to ensure Democrats are fairly represented on all levels.
Working with Democratic organizations to recruit quality candidates will be another priority. I happen to think we have a very good bench of potential candidates for statewide office right now - but we need even more. I'll continue working with the House and Senate caucuses on candidate recruitment, and we will continue programs like our municipal and county election programs.
You know me and you know what I have done. I have led a financially-sound and fiscally-responsible Party. I have put an emphasis on Party building and grassroots development. I have a solid record of leading change and innovation. And I have put my heart and soul into making our Party strong and robust.
Friends, serving as your Chair has been more than a job to me. The Michigan Democratic Party has been like family. And like all families, we can disagree at times. I will never forget or lose sight of how blessed I am to be working with so many good people who are willing to fight for what they believe in.
I am more excited than ever to continue that fight with you. I hope to earn your support tomorrow at Cobo Center in Detroit.
Sincerely,
Mark Brewer
