| If you're looking for just one dumb thing to read this week, I'd highly recommend this commentary piece from CapCon about why wealth inequality isn't so bad, and why it's actually fun to be poor. It's incoherent, stupid and argues against itself all at the same time. This part, in particular, is worthy of attention. Not everyone follows this pattern of high-income high-savings or low-income low-savings. A person can go bankrupt at any income level as celebrities like MC Hammer and Willie Nelson have shown. Conversely, there are plenty of people who show how they and their families live a good life on less than $15,000 a year. We’re free to be as profligate or as thrifty as we want.
I am one of those people, in fact. Got a utility shut-off notice today. If I don't give Consumers $225 dollars in short order, which I don't have because my rent this month is already late because I had to give Consumers $300 last month (winter heat), they'll shut off my electricity sometime next week. I prefer to think of this as less a crisis and more a matter of thrill seeking. It's kind of like a live action version of Jack London's To Build a Fire! |
