50 State Ad Network

Pretty excellent savaging of that RGA ad

We all know that the RGA's latest attack ad is pretty dumb. It attacks Mark Schauer for a bill he simply voted in favor of as a state representative, but was signed into law by John Engler and then was extended by the pen of Rick Snyder (a piece of legislation sponsored by a Republican). It's dishonest and if this is supposed to be part of the foundation being laid to paint Schauer as a tax-and-spend liberal pretty shaky stuff. Once you push on it, it crumbles apart like improperly made adobe.

Deadline Detroit has a column this morning really exploring why the ad is dishonest and dumb. It's worth a read and a share on social media networks, since it does what the media is supposed to do and which most of our media is unable or unwilling to do ... explain the in's and out's of various ads rather than merely repeating the point in a second place. Here's an excerpt.

The tax on nursing home beds was a bipartisan effort to get matching funds. It works like this: The state taxes nursing home beds. That allows the state then to get matching federal dollars that go back to nursing homes that participate in Michigan's Medicaid program.

Ends up that the state receives more in federal matching Medicaid funds than what is paid out by nursing homes for this tax.

So it’s not a case of socialism run amok, with Michigan extracting wealth from the small-business people that operate nursing homes. Nor is it a case of the government taxing the infirm pensioner, because in the end, the care-recipient ends up with value that outweighs their contribution for the bed tax.

The bill also required that nursing home employees have criminal background checks conducted, so that, you know, there isn't a rapist, a murderer, or a member of the Insane Clown Posse giving grandma her sponge bath.

It would be nice, but is highly unlikely, to get one of the Republicans who voted in favor of this to step forward and criticize the RGA for trying to politicize a bill that helps people in nursing homes rather than trying to turn them into political chess pieces.
