Who said running a pyramid scheme can't be fun? Windquest - owned by Amway Alticor president Doug DeVos - braved the treacherous shoals of Pyramid Scheme Point to finish FIRST in the annual Chicago to Mackinac race! This, just after the same multi-million dollar yacht finished first in the Port Huron to Mackinac race! I must readjust my monocle! Good show, old boy! Jeeves, bring the car around. I must go congratulate Baron DeVos personally. I do say, this is quite an occasion. Care for some sherry?
Now in case some of you think I'm being a tad bit unfair in picking on Dick's brother here in his moment of glory, let me lay some facts out for you to consider.
The articles about the Windquest's good fortunes all say the boat is owned by Doug DeVos. But up until at least last year, the boat was described as belonging to DICK and Doug DeVos:
2004 Newport to Bermuda race
2005: Transpac race
A number of times, the yacht was even described as belonging to Dick and Dick alone:
May, 2004: Block Island race
2004: Chicago to Mackinac race
2005: right after he/they bought the Windquest (formerly the Zephryus V
However, according to the U.S. Coast Guard Registry (type in "windquest"), the boat is actually owned by an entity known as "DV Sailing, LLC" - and was registered as such this past February.
Is this when Dick's stake in the boat ended? If the Windquest is such a great boat, why did he sell out? Hey...are we even sure he really did sell off his stake? Wouldn't that be something? It wouldn't suprise me. Someone really ought to ask Amway Guy or one of his handlers for the full story.
Either way, it seems like it might be an interesting weekend story, if nothing else - i.e., here's this high-rolling former pyramid scheme operator who's thinking about trying to buy the Governor's chair. Meanwhile, he's got this super-phat boat that wins all of these races - but he decides to sell it off. I'll bet that was a hard decision. Man, that boat is nice. I can fault them for many things...but sure they do have good taste in yachts!
Anyway, all I'm saying, dear capitol press corps folks, is that it would be interesting to know why Dick doesn't own the Windquest anymore. Now that it's finished first in the Port Huron and Chicgao to Mackinac races, does he wish he still did own it? If you happen to run into one of the Amway Guy folks and think of it, ask them.
Dang! I wish I would have thought of it sooner. I happened to see JT walking around a little over an hour ago while the Hannahdog and I were getting coffee (actually I just got coffee. Hannah gets a scoobysnack).
Come to think of it, we still haven't seen Amway Guy's tax returns either, have we?
