Amway Guy camp down to $1 million!!!

by: matt

Fri Jul 28, 2006 at 19:11:44 PM EDT

Yeah right! (pause, then raucous laughter) From the AP:
Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos has given his campaign nearly $13 million so far, according to campaign finance reports filed Friday.

The Ada businessman and multimillionaire said he has raised $15.7 million this year and $17 million this election cycle. His campaign has spent about $15 million this year and more than $16 million in the election cycle, leaving it with $1 million on hand.

Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm reported raising $3.4 million so far this year and $11.2 million this election cycle. She spent $1.3 million this year and $4.1 million this election cycle, leaving her with $7.2 million on hand.

-snip-

DeVos, who gave his campaign more than $750,000 in 2005, has given his campaign donations ranging from $500,000 to $3 million so far this year. Last month, he contributed two checks worth $4 million in one week.

His campaign has spent much of the money on a statewide TV ad blitz that began in mid-February and has cost more than $10 million so far, according to the nonpartisan Michigan Campaign Finance Network.

The Granholm campaign has not run any ads so far. But the Michigan Democratic Party has spent more than $2 million on ads promoting the governor's job-creation plan. (emphasis added)
And here's the take from Townsend Street:
LANSING- Today Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer releases the following statement regarding GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos’ pre-primary campaign finance report.

“The fact that Dick DeVos has already raised over $17.5 million, of which more than $12.8 million is from his inherited Amway wealth, demonstrates that he is capable of spending $60 million or more on this election. The nearly $16.5 million that DeVos spent before an uncontested primary is nearly twice as much as any other Michigan gubernatorial candidate has spent on an entire election, said Brewer. “But because this is an election not an auction, all of the money in the world can’t hide his history of cutting Michigan jobs, creating jobs in Communist China and supporting extreme right-wing groups and causes. All of DeVos’ money will not be able to distort Governor Granholm’s record of diversifying Michigan ’s economy with the nation’s most aggressive economic plan, fighting for healthcare for everyone in Michigan and being a leader in public education for our state.

Uh-oh (4.00 / 2)
I better donate money to his campaign!

He can't afford to keep giving to his own campaign when he has three houses to pay for!

A MAN HAS TO EAT, PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good advertisement for affirmative action (4.00 / 3)
The fact that so many politicians end up buying government positions these days, either with their own money or from lobbyists/special interests money, should be a motivator to keep affirmative action.  Although, I believe affirmative action should be targeted at poor socioeconomic groups in general - not necessarily particular races/sexes.  I think the whole point is to give people who didn't come from a royal family - um, I mean a rich/well-off family - a fighting chance at becoming all that God intended them to be and realizing their gifts to the fullest, ya know?

Bottom line is that our freedom is seriously threatened by religious zealots (not unlike Iraq or Afghanistan) who go by the names Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, James Dobson, Adam Maida, and so on ... not to mention the politicians who bow down to them.  Poor people are the most vulnerable to these freedom-haters.  Save America - Vote Democrat!

Amway Camp down to 1 M (4.00 / 2)
Pretty Impressive that he is still behind in the polls after spending as much as he has. The Governor hasn't even really started campaigning.

Lets hope when she does start the Democrats come out to vote.

They key issue (0.00 / 0)
Will be the effectiveness of Granholm's ads once they begin after Labor Day.  Are they going to be full of cotton-candy and smiles, or will they actually address the menace she faces.

Will she paint DeVos as the real right-wing radical wacko that he is.  A person with no ideas except rewarding insurance companies and destroying unions and small businesses.  Or will she wimp out.  She better come strong because if she doesn't, we've got some problems.

Link Mel Gibson to Church to DeVos ... bye bye Jewish vote (0.00 / 0)
Well, after Mel Gibson showed his true colors after being stopped for a DUI this weekend here in California, I suspect the notion that Republicans are freedom-hating, anti-semitic (well, anti- any religion outside of Catholic or Protestant), selfish nut cases who are purely looking for opportunities for power grabs to translate into easier lives for themselves on the backs of regular Americans.

Honestly, I'm so annoyed with church leaders in this country these days and their assault on America's Constitution. They may not be blowing up abortion clinics, but they are certainly attacking our rights.

Granholm ain't losing (4.00 / 1)
The Jewish vote.  I can assure you of that.

Granholm's strategy pays off now (4.00 / 1)
She's waited this long to really hit hard with her advertising, and she's still neck and neck with him in the polls.  DeVos has spent himself into a corner, and I think we'll start seeing Granholm campaigning more aggressively now.  Couldn't have worked better for her!

Well (0.00 / 0)
I think she could have done a better job getting free publicity.  DeVos has to have a dozen skeletons in his dirty closet and releasing one would have had the press howling.  This type of news is effective and very inexpensive.

Look at what Bush did in 2004.  Does anyone think it was an accident the Swiftboat thugs started to ramp up their attack in August, right after the Democratic convention and exactly when Kerry had to slow down spending until public funds were released after the Republican convention.  It was this free publicity that eventually sunk the campaign.
