John Engler: Be nice to Amway

by: matt

Thu Sep 14, 2006 at 12:35:24 PM EDT

The illustrious former Governor of Michigan-turned manufacturing lobbyist John Mathias Engler sounds off on the op-ed page of the Detroit News today. John "The Body" (as we used to call him - apologies to Jesse Ventura) says Amway/Alticor is just fine and dandy.
These are solid jobs, with good pay and benefits. And Alticor employs more than 400 employees in research and development and quality assurance.

While I'm no stranger to the campaign rough-and-tumble, it seems to me we ought to be thanking a Michigan manufacturer that employs thousands of Michigan workers, creates products valued by customers worldwide and invests in America's economic future.
What about the pyramid, John? The pyramid...

Compare Mr. Engler's comments to the email I just received (posted below) from Eric Scheibeler.

Oh, pleeeeease, Mr. DeVos: put Gov. Engler in a TV commercial. Or maybe have Amway put him in a TV ad. Pleeeeeease...I SO want to see that!

Looks like NoviDemocrat has a post on this too. He doesn't have that charming picture, though.

I want to thank you for all the links to other local bloggers.  I had no idea we had so many, and I can't believe all the good stuff I'm learning.

I don't think I could stand to look at his mug more than once! Your take on the editorial is much more colorful than mine. I'll work harder next time to meet the ML standards!

PUT ENGLER IN AN AD! (4.00 / 1)
Matt's right, someone needs to put tubs in an ad ASAP. It's a great chance to remind voters about the pile of crap he left for Granholm after leaving office.

Remember, in the two and a half years before Governor Granholm took office, Michigan lost 240,000 total jobs under Engler/Bush.

Engler = Bush = DeVos = Disaster for Michigan

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few

Even his photo looks sticky.

Amway is "good"? AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHH (n/t) (4.00 / 1)

Check out my mediocre blog.

Hear, Hear! (4.00 / 3)
Thank you John Engler for "weighing" in on this.

Michigan should be thanking Dick Devos for Amway. In addition to creating hundreds of jobs in Michigan, Amway has touched countless other Michiganians in so many ways.

Amway, it's NOT an illegal pyramid scheme!

The Dick Eliminated Jobs At Amway Is the Issue, Not The Quality of the Jobs Left in Ada (4.00 / 2)
The fat man is setting up a strawman arguement as the issue is not the quality of jobs left at Amway. The issue is The Dick claims to be a job creator yet under his leadership Amway eliminated 1,400 jobs in Ada, Michigan, while he created thousands of new jobs in China. Don't get suckered into the fat man's argument because we lose as I am certain the manufacturing jobs left in Ada are okay jobs. But remember that is not the issue, Devos claims he is a job maker, but he did not make any jobs in Michigan. DeVos is a fraud as a job maker.

John Engler (0.00 / 0)
Don't be so hasty in hoping that Engler will do a TV spot or two for DeVos.  As hard as it may be to believe, Engler is still viewed by many as "the best Governor MIchigan as ever had". He has the ability to marshall a lot of support, and in a close election he could tip the balance (and please no 'teeter / totter' jokes).

I stand by my statement (0.00 / 0)
You're right that there are still some misguided souls who view John Mathias as "the best Governor Michigan ever had." Yet I would bet there are just as many (if not more) with a profoundly negative opinion of him. I have no data to back this - just a hunch. It would be an interesting polling question for the next EPIC-MRA survey, though.

Anyway, how can I put this? Let's just say John Mathias Engler is not the most telegenic fellow in the world. Come to think of it, I can't recall him ever addressing the camera in any of his campaign commercials or on behalf of anybody (anyone remember any?). Did he ever do any spots for George Bush in 2000? I don't believe so. There's a reason for this.

Four reasons why Engler was not a great governor (0.00 / 0)
1. Justice Clifford Taylor.
2. Justice Stephen Markman.
3. Justice Robert Young.
4. Justice Maura Corrigan.

At the end of his first race for governor (0.00 / 0)
There was one where he talked about taking his Oldsmobile to Mackinac Island instead of flying and another with his mother that went something to the effect of... "some people say I so mean my own mother won't vote for me."

Both were short spots, but he did appear from the waist up.

But Old Johnny Engler (with reference to a 45 he had cut to the tune of Johnny Angel as a promo for his 40th birthday party/fund raiser right before the '90 election) was considerably trimmer back then - not that he was ever svelte.
