Did you notice in tonight's debate that Dick DeVos (R-Amway) refused to answer the questions raised about his record as Amway CEO incorporating his company in Bermuda to avoid U.S. taxes? It's disappointing.
In fact, I'm not just disappointed, I'm furious. That's because Bermuda is a tax haven country. That's a matter of Michigan Law.
In fact, over the last 3 years, the Michigan Legislature, controlled by Republicans who support the Amway Guy, has enacted laws designating Bermuda as a tax haven country five separate times. Michigan law provides:
“Tax haven country” includes a country with tax laws that facilitate avoidance by a corporation or an affiliate of the corporation of United States tax obligations, including Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Commonwealth of the Bahamas, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, the principality of Liechtenstein, the principality of Monaco, and the Republic of the Seychelles.
