The Last Word

(Methinks this ought to sit up top just a little longer - promoted by matt)

UPDATE by Matt: Public Sector Consulting's Bill Rustem also picked up on the Guv's good closer - as reported by the DN.

The Governor NAILED IT with her closing statement. She's been criticized in the past (sometimes with justification) for going on too long with policy specifics. But not in that closer. The Governor took it straight to the heart of the matter - as the very last word in the very last debate, no less. Here's what she said:
"I'm somebody who has fought for you - for all citizens - and he is somebody who has stood on the other side of the things that I have fought for.

I fought  to create jobs here and diversify our economy in Michigan. He's elminated 1,400 jobs in Michigan when he was CEO of Amway.

I fought the policies of outsourcing and unfair trade of George Bush. He's George Bush's...one of their biggest backers and has supported those unfair trade policies that have hurt us.

I went to Asia to bring home 22 companies, 1,000 jobs and $200 million in investment. He went to Asia, and invested $200 million to create thousands of jobs there.

I'm somebody who strongly believes that a woman should have the right to choose. My opponent strongly believes that that right should be - that she would be criminalized - a criminal - if she chose that right even in the case of rape or incest.

I support embryonic stem cell research. He opposes it.

I support public education. He led the voucher movement to take money away from public education.

I'm somebody who believes in health care for all. His health care plan is "get a job."

I'm somebody who believes...I will not gut public safety in order to fund business tax cuts. He incorporated his subsidiaries in Bermuda to avoid paying U.S. taxes.

There are vast differences, but I'm going to fight for YOU and for opportunity for all.

We may not all have gotten here on the same boat, but we're in rocky seas...and we're all in the same boat now. My opponent is an expert yachtsman. And, I believe that his philosophy - is each man for himself. But I am the captain of this ship of state...and I will bring us ALL into port. My philosophy is "all hands on deck."

I ask for your vote on November 7.
Rock solid. That's it. That's what this election is about.

You Nailed it Matt (4.00 / 1)
Spot on analysis.  The most telling portion of the debate.

It is what the entire election is about, in 2 minutes or less.

I'm stealing this. (0.00 / 0)
Thank you for that transcription.

(P.S. Throw "transcription" in the title- lots of people using that as a search word.)

About that boat analogy (4.00 / 2)
I felt a little iffy on that boat analogy the first time around, but looking back on it, especially getting to re-read the rest of the closing, I'm liking it more and more.

She really hit it out of the ballpark tonight.  I thought this was far and away the best of her debate showings this year, and that's saying a lot since the other 2 were great for her as well.  Keeping him on the defensive between now and the 7th is key and I can tell she gets that.

Now to see what Channel 7's "undecided viewers" have to say...

Exactly my words last night (0.00 / 0)
She hit it out of the ballpark -- maybe she should do an ad with Maggs!

I was at the rally outside WXYZ before the debate and at the debate-watching party down the road at a CWA local.  The Gov, First Gentleman and their son came by for a few minutes after the debate. It was great being able to give her a hug after that debate and to congratulate her on a job well done in person.

I've had several opportunities this summer to see her up close and personal and I never fail to be inspired by her.  Her warmth and openness just draw you in and you know she would never do anything to hurt anyone or our state.  I trust her implicitly.

Way to go, Jenny!

What a Dick... (4.00 / 2)
On Dick's website he says Michigan is going down, sinking...

DeVos Wins, Granholm Strikes Out

[Fast Forward to the last comment on this page]

LIE:  The governor says, "I am the captain of this ship."

TRUTH:  Apparently the Governor wants to go down with the ship.

Dick, I thought you believed in Michigan?

Brave... (4.00 / 1)
You're quite brave for venturing over there.  My head spins whenever I try to read his website.

Try reading his 64-pg plan... (0.00 / 0)
...I almost threw up, but luckily I had the Pepto near-by.
I did shower afterwards though, it was that slimy and far-fetched.

All this in the name of my 25 Reasons Why to Just Say NO to Dick and YES to Jen. Hope you guys appreciate what 'dirty' job it's been. :-)

Believe it or not... (0.00 / 0)
I actually did try reading that thing so I could go toe-to-toe with College Republican friends at OU on it.  I think I made it through page 8 before I couldn't stand it anymore.

Josh!  I miss you at Oakland University.  Did you catch the crazy hijinks of the College Republicans President while he was on the campus of U of M?

Great Lakes, Great Times.

Oh, that I did... (0.00 / 0)
I did indeed.  I got a look at the pictures a couple days after it happened...not pretty at all.  Somehow, I wasn't surprised though.

How is the campaign going?  I don't think I've seen you since August at your last OUSC meeting...

Dick DeVos is Talking Down the Michigan Economy (4.00 / 1)
He can invest millions on his campaign and other right wing causes, but can't invest in Michigan.

Why does Dick DeVos hate Michigan?

Hopefully Michigan will hate him right back.

You should see the Det News editorial (4.00 / 1)
disgusting, and already up -- http://www.detnews.c...

And it has more exposure than my stuff on George's blog, since it will probably be pulled into rss feeds & whatnot.

You are right, that closing statement is awesome, I'm snagging it for my blog too.  (with credit to you)

thanks Matt.  :)

I was hoping for better (4.00 / 1)
Repeatedly in the debate Granholm just hammered DeVos -- like that time she cited the  interstate Commerce Clause from the US Constitution.  That was so smoking.

But the end?

Well, yes, better than DeVos.  His was pretty lame.  Otoh, Granholm was tight.  very scripted.  So the presentation seemed stilted, the metaphor was nice but not delivered all that well.  (the speech coach in me recognizes this as an adrenaline problem. 'Relax, Jennifer, Relax! i wanted to shout).

Second, the bit about choice.  The transcript does not reveal just how flubbed the line was.  As a result, it made it seem a little cheezy, not least because DDV had got himself all tangled up from the last debate on this very issue, so that the hard right was doubting him.  It played to the base but didn't especially win the center -- and it may have motivated his base.

Lastly, i was hoping for more uplift in the close.  The issue is not the issues, it is about a future, and our ability to preserve the values we have here in Michigan. There is more optimism in that, an optimism she repeatedly tapped earlier in the evening.

so yeah, I'm a little disappointed.  That said, I'm parking the car, and my neighbor -- a strong R-- calls out admiringly, "Jennifer sure did great tonight!"  And hey! If that's what he's thinking then it was a VERY good night.

I have to watch it... (0.00 / 0)
I fell asleep at 7:30pm last night(Long day). Hey...I am Old Dood after all.  However, I recorded it and will watch it after work this afternoon.

BTW: None of these URL's are working correctly.  I get an error on the site's pages.

closing... (0.00 / 1)
Actually, her open and closing were the strongest she did in the debate, in my opinion.  DeVos did a much better job than he did previously, and I was disappointed in the Governor's overall performance. The next three weeks are going to be reaalllyy ugly!

Why... (0.00 / 0)
... were you disappointed by Granholm's performace?  She had facts, she addressed the issues, she discussed her plans.

DeVos improved on what, exactly?  Memorizing a scripted monologue?  He just about popped a blood vessel when Granholm brought up Bermuda.

Give credit where credit is due (0.00 / 0)
Amway Guy improved his appearance with those "panes of plastic" in front of his eyes. It was just enough to alter the deer in the headlights look to a deer in the headlights with glasses look.

And we know those were nothing but a prop since channel 7 interviewed him on the way out of the building afer the debate and he wasn't wearing them. No one would wear glasses during a television appearance and then put your contact lenses back in to leave the building. The glasses were part of his costume.

Props (0.00 / 0)
I happened to have the tele switched on to MGTV the other day: they were replaying Amway Guy's speech to the Republican State Convention. Funny thing was - he had no podium and an Oprah-style wireless mike. Even funnier, he kept holding it UPSIDE-DOWN. I shit you not. Go look at the tape. Fortunately for him it didn't matter because he had a lapel mike on. The wireless was just a prop - just like his glasses last night.

BTW, I have no idea how Joe Six-Pack might respond to the glasses. But I think they were a bad move. At first I thought he looked slightly better - but then the camera angles changed and you couldn't see Amway Guy's eyes hardly at all. He just looked senile.

i thought they were there (0.00 / 0)
to break up the eternal darkness of his eyes.  they are spooky.  before he started wearing them, you could see all the way to his dark soul.

I disagree... (4.00 / 1)
(I finally finished watching this debate...Boy I love DVRs...hehe)

I have to say the glasses were a plus for DeVos.  I really took away his "beady eyes". In other words his "WEASEL LOOK".  hehe  If he was smart he would have used them to make a point.  Like taking them off when he disagrees.  Waving them around...chew on them as to "ponder" his answer.

He was "better" this time around.  Less "shaken" when the Governor slaped him with his tax evasion.  However, none of the so called reporters picked up on that.  They should have and ran with it.  Richard Cranium would have squirmed if he was pushed for a reason for his off shore tax haven.

The Governor was stable (per usual) and stuck to her points.  She is very good at public speaking.  I am tired of people spewing that she was a Prosecutor so it is easy for her...blah..blah..blah.  That wasn't training as much as it is her heart on her sleeve.

Governor Jennifer Granholm is a genuine, warm, loving, caring person.  What you see is what you get.  I have never met the Governor...but I would bet a months pay she would actually help me if she could and not look for anything in return.  This is what I think and feel from her when I hear her speak. It is a gut feeling...I have learned over the years to trust my gut.

Richard Cranium DeVos is not warm, loving, caring, and definetely not genuine. I have seen that "look" before.  I have dealt with "Business Men/Women" like him.  Too many years of bullshit and empty promises perminates from him.  Too many years of taking care of his own flock...his own ass....his own bottom line. For he is the top dog in his "UpLine".  He does not care for the common man, woman, or child.  He only cares about keeping his tight circle of business "friends & family" happy and prosperous. He is what I would call a score keeper.  He would not give you anything unless he will receive something in return.  He would keep score with everyone.  Never would he be giving out of the kindness of his heart. He has no clue to what mercy even means.  I could go on...but it only infuriates me.

I seriously believe he has his sights set on the Presidency.  And that thought scares the shit out of me.  You only have to read the book "The HandMaiden's Tail" by Margaret Atwood to fully understand what I am talking about.

For some reason I thought a familiar military expression would've had a better impact:

"I'm fucking this chicken, Dick DeVos isn't even holding the legs!":)
