"I constantly wonder why it seems like nobody cares." (0.00 / 0)
In this excellent hour-long interview, Gov. Milliken says something to the effect of "this war disturbs me because there is no sacrifice."

When war becomes daily routine under a democracy, beneath notice, my hunch is that perhaps "democracy" no longer means what we think it means.

An Iraq vet's thoughts on 100 dead Michigan troops.

by: djtyg

Tue Oct 24, 2006 at 02:13:01 AM EDT

(If you never read another post on Michlib again, read this one. Thank you, djtyg. Thank you. - promoted by matt)

It’s hard for me to write about 100 dead Michigan troops.  I’ve now been sitting at my computer for 3 hours, trying to figure out what to say.  I began by writing about my own military experience and my time in Iraq.  It was going to be a long, two part post about everything that has happened to me since I signed the dotted line.  But I rewrote this post because this isn’t about me.  It’s about 100 families that aren’t going to see their loved ones again.  It’s about the fiances who won’t get married, the parents that won’t ever see their children again, the spouses who have to grieve while they find a way to keep their house now that their primary breadwinner is gone, and about the children who will grow up without a mom or dad.  It’s also about the military companies that have lost a quality soldier, the strong NCO who put their troops ahead of themselves, the smart officer who led the way, and the up and coming junior enlisted soldier who made their leadership smile.
djtyg :: An Iraq vet's thoughts on 100 dead Michigan troops.
I constantly wonder why it seems like nobody cares.  Why is it that after all the reasons that we went to war in Iraq have proven to be false, that the right-wingers still think we should be there?  Where are the protests on college campuses?  Why does it seem like the only protestors seem to either be Iraq vets or old ‘Nam protestors?  Why is it when a Soldier dies the media is blamed and not the policy?

Maybe they see the war as I did before I joined-a great big game or movie.  Before I actually went to war I thought it was fun.  I saw Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers 50 times, thinking that was what being in the Army was like.  It’s not.  War is being paranoid 24/7 that somebody is going to take your life, that the next day you wake up you’re going to be dodging rockets and mortars as they fly over your head.  It’s being away from your loved ones for a year and waiting for the inevitable “Dear John” letter from your girlfriend.  It’s flipping out because you aren’t within reach of your rifle.  It’s taking NyQuil and Tylenol PM so you can sleep at night.

I don’t understand why the Bush administration has refused to change their Iraq policy despite all the evidence that the war is going badly.  It used to be that the President listened to the will of the people.  But even with 2/3rd of Americans saying we should leave Iraq, he doesn’t even see the political consequences of at the very least, having a winning strategy, let alone bringing us home!  Even more so, I can’t understand why all those right-wingers have the yellow magnet ribbon on their car but refuse to question Bush when he cuts VA benefits and makes excuses for not providing Soldiers with the proper equipment and resources to do the job.

Supporting the troops is not having a yellow-magnet ribbon on your car.  It’s calling your congressman and complaining to them about why they decided to cut VA or TRICARE benefits for Soldiers.  It’s making sure that they only go to war because it’s absolutely necessary, and when they do you complain to everyone if they aren’t given the resources to do the job!  It’s taking care of the vets when they get home, and making sure they don’t end up broke and homeless.  As of this writing over 500 OEF and OIF vets are homeless.  Where is the outrage over this?  Where are Hannity and Limbaugh, telling our Government to get their shit together and do something to help them?  The only conclusion I can come up with is that they just don’t care.  While they say “support our troops” they really mean “use our troops as an excuse to further our agenda.”

Supporting the troops is NOT about defending a political stance or an ideology.  A lot of people don’t know the difference.  I can’t count the number of times some right-wing civilian had the nerve to question my patriotism because I didn’t support the President and thought that going after the terrorists that attacked us on 9/11 was a higher priority than invading a country that had nothing to do with it!  And yet those cowards run and hide when I tell them to enlist.

When I got home from OEF I learned real quick what the yellow-magnet meant when people put them on their cars.  It meant that they didn’t feel like they had to do anything for the troops.  Their “moral support” was enough.  It’s the same thing with the old “Power of Pride” bumper stickers you used to see on a bunch of cars.  To those people I say: YOUR BUMPER STICKER DIDN’T DO A DAMN THING TO OSAMA AND YOUR YELLOW MAGNET DOESN’T KEEP US ALIVE IN THE COMBAT ZONE!

As I’ve said in other posts,
I’m a Christian and yet I don’t wear my faith on my sleeve
.  But the very same politicians and pundits who say we need to “stay the course” are the very same people who love to use God and the Bible to justify the war and their agenda.  But God knows what’s really going on.  He can’t be mocked.  And these people have set themselves on a course to Hell.

Matt asked earlier why local media missed the 100 mark.  It’s because they don’t care, Matt.  They don’t.  If they did, they’d be reporting on the Downing Street Memo everyday until Bush was impeached.  But they know that by saying outright that this war was a lie, those on the right would stop buying their newspapers or watching their news channel.  They care more about the bottom line than they do our Soldiers.  With the exception of a few, it’s not about a conservative bias.  It’s about money.  And the truth just doesn’t sell.

"Why is it when a Soldier dies the media is blamed and not the policy?"

I wonder about that all the time.  You really hit on a lot of what I feel about this war.  Thanks for your post, DJ.

Check out my mediocre blog.

Thank you for your service dj (4.00 / 5)
Very nice diary. You summed it up perfectly when you said-

"They care more about the bottom line than they do our Soldiers."

That goes for this administration, too. Plenty of Bush's "friends" are getting rich off of this war. The war stops, the feeding at the government trough stops.

Keep writing- you have a powerful voice to share.

Thoughts... (4.00 / 5)
Thank you.

I almost didn't write a comment because I wasn't even sure what to say. My dad's a vet from Vietnam, and you seem to echo a lot of his thoughts. I emailed him both Matt's post about the list of fallen soliders along with your post, because I think your writting is something that he can appreciate and agree with.
WK's right, you need to keep writing, show the pain, show the hurt, show the fear and disappointment. It's not only therapeutic for you, but it's therapeutic for those who have walked in your shoes and your raw pain that you unabashedly convey thru your writing is eye-opening for many of us who might otherwise go unaware.
It's not pretty, sexy or glamorous - it's everything that American media isn't - but at the end of the day, it's the truth, and if we can't keep talking about that, then we've surely given up.

My guard unit is in Iraq... (4.00 / 6)
I have been an MP in the guard for about 4 years.  I was supposed to deploy with my unit to Iraq in July.  Due to a divorce and some legal issues coming out of it they kept me home.

The unit I was attached to just hit country a couple of weeks ago.  I pray every day that I don't see someones name on that list that I know.  Even though I oppose the war, I hate the guilt I feel not being there...

Anyway, I agree that nobody cares.  It isn't like World War I and II, the country isn't behind the war effort, and why should they be?  The administration isn't committed to "winning", why should the people be?  I don't even understand it anymore, we aren't preventing civil war, we haven't made progress toward democracy... Who is benefiting now?

Thanks for your service!  I appreciate it.

Let me preface my comments with an observation - that many of the soldiers of our Republic, of which I was one, chose military service as a path to serve something greater than themselves. Others choose other paths, be it the Peace Corps, America Corp or political involvement. The children of the conservative political and economic elite pay no price, bear no burden - they are Freedom's Freeloaders. That is the decadence that Conservative's rail against - those who receive the all the benefits but pay none of the costs of civilized society.

Conservatism puts its Ideology ahead of citizens. The political leadership, and here is Bush's brilliance, serve their ideology first. If the facts do not fit their beliefs, they ignore the facts - whether on August 6, 2001 or in Iraq today. That is the great and continuing failing of Conservatism.

The disgrace of Iraq is the statements of the self proclaimed Christian values of conservatives' that War, and all the killing it involves, is justified not based on the complete evidence, the whole truth, but by 'slam dunk' evidence that matches the justification of conservative ideology. The soldiers of our republic were betrayed by the political elite who started this war.

The lesson to learn is not to compromise our fundamental values in the name of bi-partisanship - whether in the run up to a war or the enactment of the evil of torture as an approved instrument of American public policy. (You should read the words of Lincoln, 'what they ask of us', in his speech at the Cooper Union {http://digbysblog.bl...} (http://members.aol.c...). The truths then are as self-evident now on the nature of conservatives and liberals today.

Our obligation as citizens, just as it was when I was on active duty, is to the Constitution of the Republic. My personal obligation  is to the core principle of our nation and the Democratic Party- that it is self evident that all men - and women - are created equal and are endowed by inalienable rights. I will not yield the rights the creator gave to me at birth to the politicians in Washington on the hope they can keep me safe; for I know that once yielded I will be left begging like a dog to use what the creator had freely given. (Care to line up like dogs in the 'free speech zone'? - It is a disgrace for Americans to be so treated). I will fulfill that obligation by active participation in the political process so as to transform the political leadership - to return government to the people, for the people, of the United States. Only when that leadership change occurs will we see the begging of the end of the tragedy in Iraq and the true battle at home to fully restore American justice at home.

Excellent post... (0.00 / 0)
I have nothing to add.  It is said just perfectly.  However, I will say this.  Since I have read the Book Team Of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin I have learned alot more about Lincoln (and how he thinks) then I ever learned in school.

I highly recommend that book.

There's a piece about our legislators and their grades in terms of supporting our troops.

I see that my Republican homies have a lot of "Dazzling", "Excellent" and "Fantastic" ratings while many of the do-nothing, Osama-loving Dems seem to be "Awful".
