Nominations Open for Michigan’s Worst 25

by: MichiganCaucus

Mon Nov 20, 2006 at 06:47:06 AM EST

(From the diaries - promoted by matt)

Logo25 The Michigan Caucus is taking nominations for Michigan’s Worst 25 List for 2006. So, nominate your favorite candidate, Republican, Democrat, Independent, or whatever, it doesn’t matter. The only criteria is that the nominee demonstrates the very worst in Michigan politics.

And 2006 gave us a bumper crop of misfeasance, malfeasance, hypocrites, race-baiting, hyper-spending, exaggeration, lies, jingoism and just plain stupidity.

SO DO IT NOW! All nominees will go up for a vote starting December 10. The winner will receive the coveted Tin Can Trashcan®. See the current Worst 25 List.

POST YOUR NOMINEE NOW!

Anyone? (4.00 / 1)
In that case, Bill Ford, Matt Millen, and the Detroit Lions.

Anyone! (0.00 / 0)
Ford, Millen and the Lions, too.

Actually, it's "Lions," not Lions (4.00 / 2)
The lion is a proud and noble animal; in fact, it's referred to as the King of the Beasts. The lion should in no way be associated with this pathetic excuse for a sports franchise.

Roger Kahn (3.40 / 5)
The ads run against Carl Williams were reprehensible enough...but his weak assed claim that he couldn't stop them show him to be the slimiest person in Lansing...

My pick: (3.50 / 6)
Cropsey, Cropsey, Cropsey, Cropsey and... Cropsey.

... or Tim Skubick.

Do you need me to elaborate, or is the name enough? ;)

Could we forget that Paragon of Righteousness, that Guru of Intolerance, the Merchant of Venom, His Honorable the Crosey?

Yep.  Loathe the Crops.  PrideSource already had a write-up on him as "Creep of the Week":

Bruce Patterson, hands-down. (4.00 / 2)
I nominate: State Senator Bruce Patterson (R-Canton). Here are merely a few of the reasons why...

- Patterson exploded in a March 2006 Senate Energy & Technology Committee meeting. Mind you, he is supposed to be the Chair. For video documentation, be sure to check out "Patterson Gone Wild" on YouTube.

- Assaulted a young woman after she questioned him and his campaign staffer in the act of removing his Democratic opponent, Mark Slavens, lawn signs. You should read the police reports -- it is intense.

- On the note of his campaign stealing lawn signs, the Slavens campaign had about 2,000 lawn signs. Over the course of the campaign, nearly 1,000 had been taking. That is a lot of lawn signs to be taking down.

- Took over $40,000 in campaign contributions from energy companies in the past year alone, while chairing (but not leading with results for us consumers) the Senate Energy & Technology Committee.

- Exploded at this October's League of Women Voters Forum, after coming in late, that involved shouting and interrupting his opponent. He also berated the audience, all the while insulting our intelligence with misrepresentations of his behavior and record. He also claimed that his rosacea (not clear on the spelling of that, I must admit) was a certifiable disability.

- His campaign, it is presumed, is responsible for dumping screws and nails behind the tires of his opponent's campaign workers outside of their campaign office on Election Day. Two supporters got flat tires, not to mention were hampered in their Election Day efforts.

- Two months ago, he called State Senator Mark Schauer, then-Minority Floor Leader, "a sanctimonious little fart" whose eyes were brown "Because hes full of crap up to his hairline." He said that to the press.

- He assaulted State Representative John Stewart in 2002 by shutting Stewart's car door on him to try and get him to shut up after an 11th district GOP meeting in Garden City. Ask Stewart about it. He'd love to tell you.

- He sat on then-State Representative Bob Gosselin when he was House Majority Floor Leader to convince his fellow Republican to vote his way.

- Although I was not there to witness it, it has also been widely discussed how he publicly exploded at fellow Republican James DeSaena (former Wyandotte Mayor and head of MDOT) and made something out of nothing. Elected officials know more about it than I do.

- Raised $700,000 (at least -- there is still a post-general filing yet to come out) for his 2006 campaign. That is a shitload of money. He outspent his Democratic opponent ten-to-one. With that said, he only squeaked by with 51% to 49%.

Great Lakes, Great Times.

You make a compelling case for Patterson (0.00 / 0)
I don't know Bruce Patterson, I'm in West Michigan, but this has got to be grounds for a referandum on him, no?  That is, if his constituents can get this information.  I was going to vote Betsy DeVos on general principles, but I think Bruce even has her beat.

DeRoche, L.Brooks, Walberg, Kwame (R-Detroit) (0.00 / 0)
DeRoche: For suggesting that diusabled people don't deserve a pay raise.

Hell Brooks Patterson: For gutting the state budget.

Walberg: Do I need to explain this one?

Kwame: Showed up at a GOP fundraiser. Explains a lot about his incompetence.

Maybe we should have a special media round: The Detroit News vs. The Grand Rapids Press!

Tom "Mr. Save Everybody's Soul" Monaghan (0.00 / 0)
and also because the his pizza tastes like crap.

My favorite Monaghan quote (4.00 / 2)
He donated millions to rebuild a cathedral in Central America, and someone asked him whether that money might be better spent on the poor. His reply: the cathedral will bring them to Heaven, food and medicine would enable them to commit more sin. A compassionate conservative, indeed.

For the record, I ate my last Domino's pizza in 1985.

Heaven (0.00 / 0)
Damn it! There you go again, Bleeding Heart Liberals, wanting luxuries like food and medicine. OK, you can have 'em, but it will cost you.

Wonder how much that cathedral costs to maintain, and who pays for that?

[ Parent ]
A Story ... (4.00 / 2)
We once heard that the reason Dominoes bought a printing company was so that they could just print their “pizza” on some cardboard with inkjet printers fitted with “tomato sauce,” “pepperoni,” “cheese,” and whatever “ink.” Frankly, we think plain cardboard wouldn’t be so bad…

Frank Beckmann! (4.00 / 1)
He did try to sue Matt.  Put him on the list!

Putting conservatives in charge of our government makes about as much sense as GM hiring a CEO who hates cars.

Yeah... (0.00 / 0)
Don't forget Paul W. Smith.  The only good thing about him is he makes me really miss J.P McCarthy.  J.P. at least had class and talent.

A snake in the grass.

That name -- (0.00 / 0)
I think it is also the name of a character in Toni Morrison's "Love" ... Its been a few years since I've read it, though, so the first name could be off.

Two of our editors were always wondering about that. Thanks.

Bruce Patterson (0.00 / 0)
I wonder how we could actually get a referndum to boot Patterson out of office. Any Ideas?

Recall petition (0.00 / 0)
to get a special election.

But, in all hoesty, right after the election it won't be particularly well received by people. Start recording and wait until he explodes on the floor of the Senate, or in a committee hearing. After a few instances - especially if they can be viewed as obstructionist you might get people interested.

As an aside, John Engler, Spencer Abraham and Peter Secchia used recall petitions in 1983 to turn control of the state senate. They took two seats as part of a backlash after Blanchard signed income tax legislation.

Engler was the senate minority leader at the time. Abraham was state GOP chair. Secchia was Michigan's male delegate to the national GOP committee.

It was the start of Engler's eventual run for governor in '90.

Legal note on recalls: (4.00 / 1)
I do believe the law states that at least six months from the time of the officeholder's election must pass before any recall effort could begin.

:o)
