Levin on Troop Surge

by: Cordelia Lear

Thu Jan 04, 2007 at 21:46:44 PM EST

This evenings talking head shows left me a little befuddled. More than once I heard our Senator, Carl Levin, was willing to talk about a troop surge in Iraq.

Hello?

False alarm. If the quotes in the print media are accurate, the impressions the talking heads left was an over reaction.

From Reuters

Michigan Democrat Sen. Carl Levin also predicted the Republican president would soon find a way to end the "open-ended commitment" of U.S. troops to Iraq, even if Bush does propose a short-term boost in forces.

"I can't believe the president is simply going to say, 'We're going to increase troops in Iraq,"' Levin told reporters outside the Senate. "It's likely the president would add something of a conditionality to it."

"The (recent congressional) election is far too clear, that the public wants to change course and find a way out of Iraq and not get in deeper in Iraq," said Levin, who is the incoming chairman of the Seante Armed Services Committee.

The article continues

While he had no information on Bush's intentions, Levin said he thought Bush would "at a minimum" reverse the open-ended nature of the U.S. troop commitment in Iraq.

"I predict, whatever kind of surge he's going to propose, that he's going to find a way to correct the statement that he made twice to the Iraqis that we're there as long as the Iraqis want us to be there," Levin said.

Levin said any temporary "surge" he might consider backing, would need to be combined with the announcement of a reduction in U.S. forces starting in four to six months, and set political milestones for Iraq to meet. emphasis added

This is consistent with Levin's position to date, which can be found on his Web site.

If Levin is serious about starting a withdrawl in four to six months, and I have no reason to doubt it, BushCo can blather on all he wants about surges, but it isn't going to happen.

Levin's comments were a polite way of saying "You can propose anything you want Mr. President but our troops are coming home."

Thank You, Cordelia. (4.00 / 3)
Great entry.  Way to be out in front on this.

Coverage like this of Sen. Levin does the issue no favors.

So kudos!

It's also consistent (4.00 / 5)
with Harry Reid's comments in the press immediately after Bush decided to ignore the Iraq Study Group findings and go for his "surge."  In fact, Levin's quote about four to six months is almost a word for word match with Reid's.

A lot of folks on Kos went ballistic over Reid's response; they wanted him to come in swinging and just tell Junior no way.  I think we're all so used to being the minority party and getting stomped on that we're overreacting now because the dems haven't declared all-out war on Bush.

Thing is, all-out war is  posture of weakness.  "Speak softly and carry a big stick" is still the most powerful attitude in politics.  With emphasis on that big stick.  Look at Levin's words:  "I predict...that he's going to find a way to correct..."  Nothing conditional there.  He sounds like a pissed off dad reassuring the principal that his teenage son will be attending classes regularly from now on.

From Levin's newsletter today (4.00 / 2)
As the new Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, my first priority will be to promote change in our Iraq policy.  Only a political solution among the Iraqi leaders themselves can salvage that country, but right now Iraqi leaders are fiddling while Baghdad burns.  The way to stop that dithering is to tell the Iraqis that our presence is not open-ended.  We need to deliver a cold dose of reality and tell them that we are not going to be their security blanket without end, and that we will begin a phased redeployment of U.S. forces from Iraq within four to six months.  Beginning this month, I will hold hearings in the Senate Armed Services Committee to examine the Administration's Iraq policy and to press for a new way forward.

The worm has definetely turned on Iraq.... (4.00 / 1)
Today on MSNBC there was a Congresswoman from New Mexico who was being interviewed on troop escalation.  She was a Republican, so I watched it thinking "here comes the Bush talking points."

But much to my surprise, she said that we need to get our troops home and that US troops "cannot and should not be stopping the sectarian violence."  She also opposed sending more troops to Iraq.

It's amazing to see now that even the Republicans are looking at the war in Iraq as a failure.

Putting conservatives in charge of our government makes about as much sense as GM hiring a CEO who hates cars.

Firmer news from (4.00 / 1)
Pelosi and Reid
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., shot down the suggestion of more troops within a day of gaining control of Congress.

There's also a quote from Heather Wilson of NM. (see djtyg's comment above)

Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., an Air Force veteran and member of the House Intelligence Committee, said she would not support increasing troop levels "to do for the Iraqis what the Iraqis will not do for themselves."

"I also have not seen a clarity of mission, and I think that's the greatest weakness that we have right now," Wilson said. "We're talking about goals in lofty terms that are not vital American national interests. American troops should only go in harm's way to protect America's vital interests."
