Young Dems Convention, This Saturday

by: lpackard

Wed Jan 24, 2007 at 11:51:03 AM EST

(Bumped - promoted by lpackard)

As previously noted here, the Michigan Young Democrats are having their convention this Saturday. The Michigan Young Democrats are open to all Michigan residents aged 15-35. Read more, including a list of candidates, at the MYD website.

This convention will take place on Saturday January 27, 2007, beginning at 10 am, at the:

Michigan Teamsters Joint Council #43 Complex
2741 Trumbull Detroit, MI 48216

Victory Together Slate Presidential Candidate Michael McGuinness introduced his slate here on Michlib. No other slates or candidates have posted on Michlib, we'd be happy to front page their diaries as well.

One thing though - it's not clear who will be allowed to vote at this convention.

The MYD constitution states that "The membership of the MYD shall be composed of all members of organizations which are chartered by the E-Board and of at-large members; any person age 15 through 35 who is member in good standing of the Michigan Democratic Party; and does not belong to a partisan organization holding or seeking to hold a place on any election ballot in the State of Michigan other than the Democratic Party." This would indicate that all Michigan Democratic Party members age 15 through 35 are automatically members of MYD.

But the MYD website says that the paying of dues and the filling out of a special form are mandatory to become a member, even though the MYD constitution says no such thing.

It'll all get sorted out at the convention, but I recommend you bring your MDP membership card with you just in case. And a drivers license or something with your birthdate on it too.

Sounds like it will come down to a fight on credentials.

Momentum (0.00 / 0)
I would like to thank Laura Packard for front paging info about the convention. Whatever happens on Saturday we do know that Victory Together has the momentum and we will help build a better Democratic Party. For more information on the Victory Together Slate check out www.myspace.com/victorytogether

Thanks

I won't be there.... (0.00 / 0)
Sorry, guys.  I have too many problems right now (starting with not having a car) and I won't be able to make it.

I just learned I wouldn't be able to vote, anyway. :(

Don't let this stand! (0.00 / 0)
The rules being published by certain people currently in leadership are wrong.  The current president himself was not elected with such credential rules (and there hasn't been a constitutional convention to make changes).

This misinterpretation makes it even more important that a lot of people show up.  The party is not made stronger by (improperly) excluding people from the process.

If anyone has problems making it to the convention due to a similar circumstance let the slate know (maybe contact the group via the MySpace page). The slate or one of its supporters may be able to arrange a ride for you.

VICTORY TOGETHER!

It's not just that I can't vote. (0.00 / 0)
I have too many issues going on this weekend to make it (for instance, my car has broken down and is in the shop).

MYD Constitution info (0.00 / 0)
Laura, thank you for raising the level of debate.  Below is an e-mail I sent out to the MYD yahoo group yesterday that should be helpful to those interested in understanding the process.

See below.

Isaac Robinson
MYD President

Dear friends,

I have been asked by several people to send out what the MYD
Constitution states about voting at MYD state conventions, chartered
groups, membership and qualifications for running for office.

I pasted the relevant sections below.

MYD members who would like a complete copy of the MYD constittuion,
should request one from any of the MYD officers or chartered chapter
leaders. You can request one from me at
williamisaacrobinso n@yahoo.com

As detailed in the 2005 call to convention and the call to
convention for this year's convention, and detailed on our
membership form that has been used during the prior administration
when I served as membership director and this administration,
regular dues are $20 and student dues are $10.

I will be sending out our tentative schedule for saturday. Please
help spread the word.

State Conventions:

Article VI Section 4: Any organization or at large member
delinquent in dues payment shall not be seated or be entitled to
vote at a convention. Notice of delinquency shall be sent to the
chartered organization and at large members with the convention
call. Delinquent dues must be received, or if mailed, postmarked,
seven (7) days prior to the convention in order to be seated and to
be eligible to vote.

Chartered Organization:

ARTICLE III: CHARTERED ORGANIZATIONS

Section 1: An organization may be chartered as an MYD
organization if it has met all of the following criteria:

A. The organization has been approved by a majority
vote of the MYD Executive Board.

B. A presiding officer of the organization submits the
following to the Membership Director of MYD:

1. A written application for charter.

2. A complete and up-to-date membership list containing the
name, address, telephone number, and date of birth of each member to
the Membership Director of the MYD at the time of application. For
purposes of chartering, this list cannot contain the names of any
persons who are members of other MYD-chartered organizations. This
provision does not prohibit a person from belonging to more than one
chartered organization for purposes other than chartering.

3. A complete and up-to-date copy of its constitution and
bylaws to the Membership Director of the MYD at the time of
application.

C. The organization pays dues set by the MYD E-Board to the
Treasurer of the MYD at the time of application.

D. The organization has a membership of at least ten (10)
persons who are age 15 through 35 years, inclusive, provided that
any organization may have non-voting members of any age.

Section 2: A chartered MYD organization may not exclude persons
from membership because of race, creed, religion, handicap, national
origin, gender, sexual orientation or economic status.

Section 3: A chartered MYD organization may not have
any members of a partisan organization which holds or seeks to hold
a place on any partisan election ballot in the State of Michigan
other than the Democratic Party.

Section 4: A charter shall be forfeited if the organization
does not satisfy the requirements of this Article by June 1 of each
year. The secretary of MYD shall notify the organization in writing
by May 1 of an impending termination.

Section 5: A charter may be granted to any college or
high school organization meeting the requirements of this article.

Membership:

ARTICLE IV: MEMBERSHIP
The membership of the MYD shall be composed of all members (as
defined in Article III, Section 1, Part B, Subpart 1) of
organizations which are chartered by the E-Board and of at-large
members; any person age 15 through 35 who is member in good standing
of the Michigan Democratic Party; and does not belong to a partisan
organization holding or seeking to hold a place on any election
ballot in the State of Michigan other than the Democratic Party.
Other interested Democrats shall be eligible for non-voting
associate memberships in the MYD. Persons who have actively
assisted in furthering the cause of the MYD may be awarded non-
voting memberships by the E-Board of the MYD.

Eligibility to run for office:

Article V Section 2: A person is eligible to run for office if
they meet the following qualification for that office as follows:

A. To be eligible to run for President, a member must have been
a MYD member in good standing for 180 days prior to the date of the
call to order of the convention at which the election is being held
and have been a paid member of the Michigan Democratic Party for 1
year prior to the State Convention or be an elected official who was
elected on the partisan ballot or is a precinct delegate.

B. To be eligible to run for Vice-President, a member must have
been a MYD member in good standing for 180 days prior to the date of
the call to order of the convention at which the election is being
held and have been a paid member of the Michigan Democratic Party
for 1 year prior to the State Convention or be an elected official
who was elected on the partisan ballot or is a precinct delegate.

C. To be eligible to run for Treasurer, a member must have been
a MYD member in good standing for 90 days prior to the date of the
call to order of the convention at which the election is being held
and have been a paid member of the Michigan Democratic Party for 180
days prior to the State Convention or be an elected official who was
elected on the partisan ballot or is a precinct delegate.

D. To be eligible to run for Secretary, a member must have been
a MYD member in good standing for 90 days prior to the date of the
call to order of the convention at which the election is being held
and have been a paid member of the Michigan Democratic Party for 180
days prior to the State Convention or be an elected official who was
elected on the partisan ballot or is a precinct delegate.

Section 3: Anyone wishing to run for the office of President,
Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer must file an affidavit of
candidacy which contains their name, address, telephone number, and
office being sought, with the secretary of the MYD at least 14
calendar days prior to the date of the call to order of the
convention at which the election is being held. Nominations from
the floor shall only be allowed if no eligible candidate has filed
an affidavit of candidacy in time for the convention.

MYD Application on-line (0.00 / 0)
Tim,

Please visit

www.mi-youngdems.yda.org

Since I was appointed membership director in 2003 and over my two years as president we have always given individuals the opportunity to apply for a waiver.

Please download the MYD application on-line and if you can't make a contribution at this time there is a box for you to check.

waiver (0.00 / 0)
Membership waivers have not been publicized by MYD before as membership dues have never been required to vote in a MYD Convention.

Your election in particular never had such credential requirements.

Youth. (0.00 / 0)
The age limits for the Young Dems Convention today proves something that's been creeping up on me for a while now - I am now MIDDLE AGED.  Is there such a place for those of us who are 35 and older and not yet wearing adult diapers?

You youngsters have fun and remember that when WE went to Convention, we walked up hill.  Both ways.

Do stupid people know they are stupid?
