MYD Convention Footage - Where Was the Vote?

by: nirmal

Wed Jan 31, 2007 at 04:10:24 AM EST

As many of you know, the Michigan Young Democrats convention took place on Saturday, January 27.  I followed all of the proper procedures prior to the convention, met the requirements to vote at the event, and was excited to meet other people like me who are passionate about the future of the Democratic party.

Unfortunately, the convention ended up being a disappointment.  Although there were numerous problems with the event, there was one particular aspect of the "convention" that I was deeply disturbed by:  Many of my fellow young Democrats and I were denied the chance to vote.  There was never a vote to choose the person conducting the election, there was never a vote for the rules that dictated the process of the election, and our votes for candidates were not counted or asked for properly.

The "compromise" slate of candidates may have been needed for party unity and it very well may have been the only feasible solution for the MYD.  I'm not in a position to be able to judge the merits of that argument.  However, regardless of the election outcome or the validity of the compromise, the behavior of Isaac and others was inexcusable.

My qualms are not with any particular candidate or slate, but rather the process of the election which was neither fair nor ethical.  In circumventing a fair process, the administrators of the election exhibited behavior that is antithetical to our core values as Democrats.  It doesn't matter if a compromise was agreed upon, because nobody had a chance to vote on it properly.  Regrettably, this "election" set a bad precedent and alienated many potential members of the organization.

Hopefully, the following footage will help shed light on what took place at the event.  Please take a look.

Where was the democracy? (4.00 / 1)
Unfortunately, this is what I'm afraid a MI state convention would look like if anyone tired to "Crash the Gates" there.

Did you ever go inside? (4.00 / 1)
What a joke.

Glad you got this recorded (4.00 / 1)
What a mess! Someone needs to do some training to teach the young Dems how democracy works.  This was total chaos.  And they were they conducting the convention outside.  Very disorganized and a bad first experience for anyone just getting involved.

i didn't record this (0.00 / 0)
but a big thanks and shout-out to the person who did!

So who is the guy in the red shirt? Is he a Republican who infiltrated the MYD's?

Internal Politics (4.00 / 2)
That's a complete farce and an old fashion coronation, whether all you "peons" liked it or not. I couldn't bring myself to laugh or make a smartassed partisan comment at this as similar stuff gets me PO'ed when it happens in my own party. Internal politics sucks and happens among all parties and everyone is worse off because of it. I'm not shocked by this. I've seen similar stuff before, and it is one hell of a learning experience the first time I saw internal politics on this level.

I have to wonder something. Which "bigwigs" are the chair and his slate backing? Is this part of a proxy battle started by a presidential candidate to set up the groundwork for 2008? People your (nirmal's) age and to a lesser extent my age are in high demand for volunteers. I have to wonder if the chair is going to try and steer everyone towards his candidate, whoever it is.

If I have to speculate, I suspect some midlevel staffer (between age 25-33) for candidate x (whoever the chair is backing) is behind this, without the candidate's knowledge. I may be off the mark, but that's just my gut speculation.

Sheesh.... (4.00 / 2)
Time to start a Young Michigan Dem. organization that actually embraces democratic ideas.  This is not what I have in mind when I think of Democracy - power grabbing knuckleheads.

Why outside? (0.00 / 0)
Also, why is this happening outdoors?  Screw these guys ... join (or start) a Democracy for America chapter and to hell with these heathens. :)

Exactly the kind of BS I Expected (4.00 / 1)
This is why when I had the opportunity to start a College Dems at my university, I decided to start  a non-affilliated progressive organization instead. I don't like it when professors, administrators, or other entities try to install "student" organizations on campuses...they simply don't work because they are not run by the students (the students are the grassroots in this case). It's happening now as the director of our Center for Policy and Public Service found some students to start a College Dems. They just want to make themselves look good and they want to be able to say they have a presence on the campus, but it will likely fail and would only be a bullet point on a resume. Sure, there are advantages to joining established organizations, but only if they are good organizations. Otherwise, make the extra effort creating your own organization. Its unfortunate we only have two choices in the U.S. I am a liberal and vote for Democrats, but I do not like the Democratic Party as an organization. I think its good to keep in mind as we post on a Website called "MichiganLiberal," not "MichiganDemocrat."

The guy in the red shirt (4.00 / 1)
The guy in the red shirt is Isaac Robinson, who was trying to prevent the Victory Together slate from being elected. In the end they were not elected, as he didn't allow all convention attendees to vote, and a compromise was struck between the two slates.

Isaac Robinson (0.00 / 0)
Mr. Robinson should be barred from being a member of the Democratic Party. He looks like he would make a damn "good" Republican.

Dont throw the baby out with the bathwater (4.00 / 4)
I'm glad to see that so many members feel that what was done was totally wrong.  We all know there are good people and there are bad people in the world and in politics.  BUT-as a member of the organization and former leader of College Dems I have to say that this is NOT the standard that we go by and NOT the way we ever have done things before.  This is a rogue group of individuals that are out to help themselves by destroying the organization.  Many Young Democrats are your campaign managers, local organizers, and leaders.  There are many staff member of MDP that are young Dems and they all do a DAMN GOOD job, along with many other leaders on campaigns and staffs.  MYD was awarded a national award for our Coordinated Campaign Program in 2002, a program that is now used nationally as the guidepost for youth organizing.  We are a great organization of great people, who make sure we can turn out the vote, support Democratic candidates and get more youth into the system.  Youth were the ONLY demographic that voted for Kerry in '04.  There is nothing wrong with that.  Victory Together was created and existed of, by, and for people who also believe in just this.  Saturday was a nightmare (trust me, I'm one of the ppl on that video), but that doesn't mean that MYD is screwed.  I just hope people will see this and stand by what we are trying to do.

On another note- The deal was broken and we are working on taking the necessary next steps to resolve this.  If you are a Victory Together supporter, please contact us.

Robinson should be Commended (1.00 / 3)
MYD President Isaac Robinson did a great job in his quest to bring together the two slates for the sake of unity, something that was forced because of a rogue movement to take over the organization. He helped forge what seemed like a compromise and then others demanded to disrupt the convention (not seen in the video) so he proposed rules and then they were voted on. could the convention have been more democratic? Probably, but Isaac did his best and clearly the prevailing slate had a vast majority of the voting delegates' support. Best of luck to the new e-board and I hope MYD leads a united front to elect Dems across the state!

ridiculous (4.00 / 1)
Yeah Isaac did a great job of promoting unity ::rolleyes::.  The first thing I ever heard him say when he walked into that room was "so where were you all for Proposal 2?"  What was that supposed to mean?  I spent a lot of time and effort campaigning against the MCRI and took offense to that statement.  Based on several other things that he had done and said, I don't think that it would have been possible for anyone to be more polarizing than he was.

"Rogue movement"?  That phrase implies that there are insiders and outsiders in this process.  We're all part of the Democratic party and we all have a right to have a voice in the way the party conducts is business.  If people are dissatisfied with the status quo, they have a right to try and change it.

It didn't look to me as though the prevailing slate had a "vast majority" of support -- but even regardless of whether they did or not, it doesn't excuse the fact that there was no legitimate election conducted.  The election wasn't run fairly, and therefore the outcome was illegitimate.  As Democrats, we shouldn't be denying people the right to vote no matter what the justification.  It is morally wrong and sets a bad example.

And based on some of the other comments in this thread, it sounds like it was some "compromise."

Interesting. (4.00 / 1)
Your point of view boggles the mind. I would hardly consider the RESPECTED party regulars that supported the Victory slate at that "convention" to be rogue! A term like that is usually reserved for those who refuse to obey generally accepted rules... in this case Robert's Rules.

The parliamentarian Gods certainly wept as they looked down on that mockery Saturday.

The best ? (4.00 / 1)
The best Isaac could do is deny members in good standing of the MYD their right to vote? The best he could do is select a location that had credentialing on one side of the street and the convention in a separate building across the street which was not large enough to accommodate all the attendees? All the people that showed up to the convention have contributed to the Democratic Party and wanted to participate in selecting the leadership of MYD. If I am not mistaken we should be worried about getting a Democrat in the White House in '08 and building on the success of 2006. Unfortunately MYD has become more about personalities than Democratic principles.

Doesn't answer (4.00 / 1)
my question.

Compromise (4.00 / 2)
In the negotiations to forge a compromise slate the Victory Together group agreed to drop our opposition to Isaac's undemocratic rules and unite and let everyone vote for a new unity slate. Isaac then bullied his way through the and in effect appointed this new slate even though it was clear that the majority of the people at the convention at least wanted to have the opportunity to not vote for the slate. As for who is the rogue group all of Victory Together's members have been involved with the Democratic campaigns for years and are all members of the Michigan Democratic Party which is more than I can say for some of the other candidates. I personally have been involved with Young Democrats longer than Isaac has and I have been to 2 national Young Democrats of America(YDA) conventions and 3 YDA quarterly meetings. After the "convention" on Saturday a lot of us were hopeful and optimistic that we could move forward with the E-board and make the organization a strong and viable one. Which if course it has been very very weak over the last 2 years. The deal that was made was that Isaac & co. would get President, Treasurer, Communications Director and one of the two YDA committee persons. Victory Together would get VP, Secretary, Membership Director, and the other YDA Committee person. Well they held up their end of the deal except for YDA committee person they appointed their own people and would not approve the Victory Together choice for YDA Committee-man. So they have violated the compromise that was reached and Victory Together is moving forward with actions to deal with the underhanded vbreaking of their promise.

Translation - step aside (4.00 / 2)
Rogue movement? That reminds me of the BS that came out of MCRGO in 02.

So....who is Mr. Robinson supporting for president? Who does he think is going to give him a job (if he doesn't have it already) if he filters the volunteers for candidate x and pads his resume?

I'm a Republican, but I'm not speaking of this with my partisan hat on. I just have a low distate for this type of internal politics - no matter which party.
