On Deck Tomorrow: Net Neutrality

by: Cordelia Lear

Fri Feb 23, 2007 at 21:20:39 PM EST

Update below the fold!

Yes, that's right. The state Democratic party Resolutions Committee has approved a net neutrality resolution which will be voted on tomorrow afternoon at the state convention.

My rumor mill is telling me that AT&T and the CWA are planning on mounting a serious challenge, and possibly a floor fight. And, you thought the 3 pm session would be boring.

We need all party members and precinct delegates to attend the convention and vote in favor of this resolution on net neutrality.

The full text of the resolution introduced by the Ingham County Democratic Party (and an identical resolution was passed in Eaton County) is below...

Cordelia Lear :: On Deck Tomorrow: Net Neutrality
A Resolution in Support of Net Neutrality Legislation

WHEREAS, the growth of a free and open internet has provided historic advances in the realms of communication, research and economic development; and

WHEREAS, development of new technology is a crucial element in the transformation of Michigan's economy to meet future needs; and

WHEREAS, to encourage broadband deployment and preserve and promote the open and interconnected nature of the internet, Michigan consumers are entitled to access the lawful internet content of their choice without interference by their internet service providers; and

WHEREAS, to encourage the transformation of Michigan's economy to meet future needs and to further the growth of Michigan's technology industry, Michigan businesses are entitled to, and require, open and unfettered internet access; and

WHEREAS, a free and open internet helps to ensure the free flow of information and political and religious speech that makes for a strong and vibrant democracy; therefore be it

RESOLVED that the Ingham County Democratic Party supports passage of Net Neutrality legislation in Michigan and at the Federal level.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Michigan Democratic Party adopt a position in favor of Net Neutrality in the State Party Platform.

CWA (4.00 / 1)
Communication Workers of America is one of the two AT&T unions across the country (the other is IEBW).

CWA will be looking for support of the UAW. The labor caucus is probably going to be lively between 10 am and noon.

Blogosphere vs. Labor? (4.00 / 2)
Is this really what you want, guys? Be warned - this will be the headline if you try to kill the net neutrality plank.

We have much better things we need to be be doing right now - things that require us to work together. Why poison this relationship?

Do not underestimate the ill will you will create with this move. It will be remembered for a long time to come...and may very well mark the beginning of a new - and ugly - chapter in our collective history. Please: don't go there.

Don't Take it for Granted that Labor is Against Net Neutraility (4.00 / 1)
Ingham County Commissioner Todd Tennis, who co-sponsored the resolution at the ICDP convention two weeks ago, is also a union lobbyist.  If all Labor was set against Net Neutrality I can't imagine that TT would have introduced it.

Sounds like they are coming to town.  Why does this have to be a conflict between us and the unions.  Why can't we just support each other?

Good news on Net Neutrality (I think) (4.00 / 2)
At last report an agreement has been reached to allow the net neutrality plank to go forward today - though there still is likely to be a post-convention attempt to minimize it. However if this deal holds together it seems to be good news. Kudos to the parties involved for working things out.

Bloggers and labor have much to gain by sticking together. Let's hope this is a positive sign of things to come.
