A Time to Act

The Senate Republicans pushed through a pretty terrible budget plan. Are you happy with it? Would you like to see something done about it? Have you made your voice heard?

One of the most frequent criticisms I've heard about bloggers is that we're all talk and no action. While it might hurt, to a certain extent, it's true. As a blogger I would say that my talk is action, but I know there's still plenty more that I can do.

So bloggers/commenters/lurkers - what are you going to do?

When was the last time you contacted your local elected officials? When was the last time you sent an email to your representative and senator? When was the last time you sent an email to friends and family encouraging them to speak out? I'm not sure how much more rotten things can get, but now is the time to walk that talk we're all so fond of preaching.

Find your representative (Democratic or Republican) and tell them what you want to see changed. Call, email, send a letter, I don't care, but make your voice heard.

You can look up your representative here and your state senator here.

You don't have to be eloquent, or well-versed in the state budget, just say what's really on your mind and send it off. Whether it's two lines or two pages, it's the action that counts.

Then, when you're done with that, get out the address book, and email your friends and family. Ask them to do the same thing. When people get involved in their government, miracles can happen, and the government can start to do what they were designed to do in the first place - work for us.

Your thoughts... (0.00 / 0)
When you contacted your local officials - what worked for you? What did you say and did you get a response? If you could do anything differently, what would you do?

Do you have any advice, questions, or comments for others who want to do the same?

whenever I ask .. (4.00 / 1)
.. for people to make contact with someone, I give them a script.  Usually preface it with, "in case you don't know what to say, here's a script for you to follow ... hello, my name is ____ and I'm calling about blah blah ..."

And I give the contact info.  Of course I usually just assume that I'm talking to Shiawassee ... I don't give out contact info for every state rep.

I was going to do a form that people could fill out & it would mail it to their reps, but I'm having trouble running php scripts on my server.  Don't want to spend all that time on it just to have it break after a few hours.

Dick Ball's office is rude and doesn't return calls.  Valde's isn't much better.  Just my experience.

Bishop is mine, unfortunately. (4.00 / 1)
I did send him an e-mail.  I got nada, zip, zero back.  Sort of like return GOP return on my taxes.  I pay, they get.

Go at 'em with video recorder in hand.... (4.00 / 2)
I'd approach my lawmaker with a video camera and ask them directly whatever I want to know.  We're their boss, for Christ's sake, and employees had better darn well let their boss(es) know what the hell they're doing!  So, I say go guerilla style, take that video camera that's been collecting dust to see your rep., get em on the recorder ... even if what you get is a smirk and maybe even belligerant reaction to the notion that a consituent deserves an answer from his/her public official.  Then, take recording and post it to a Michigan LIberal GROUP on YouTube.com and the Google video thing .... wherever else .... you are the publisher ... and let the local media outlets know about your interview (good or bad quality, it doesn't matter... you captured the reaction of your elected official ... maybe its a 60 minutes "Get that camera the hell out of my face!" or maybe its what we want - an answer.

make sure they know you are in their district (0.00 / 0)
one thing I have found is that if you give them your address they will usually respond if youre not too harsh on them. Christine is absolutely right about Dick Ball and Valde Garcia not being freindly but I dont want to be freindly with them anyway! they work for me and I am calling to let them know how I feel. raising your voice and getting into a big argument gets you nowhere fast. just let them know your position and let the staffer know that you would apreciate a response. do you care about the response? it doesnt matter, you are forcing someone in the office to respond, enough responses and the staffers let the senator or Rep. know we've been getting alot of calls or letters, that is what is important.

this is the means by which average joe can lobby legislators, if you have the patience to actually develop a relationship with a staffer your opinion may be passed on quicker. remember by initiating a response it tells more than just the person youre talking to about your stance.

about Reagan voodoo economics and being tired of getting trickled on by him and HIS President.

My state senator is Valde Garcia (4.00 / 1)
I've contacted his office 3-4 times in the 2 1/2 years I'ved lived in his district and never received a single response.  And since I'm a civil servant I always make sure to speak with a "civil tongue" when addressing him.  Oddly enough though, his office once contact me asking for my help on a subject!

My state rep is Barb Byrum.  She on the other hand is outstanding when it comes to response.  Given that Rep. Byrum and I probably agree on most of the things I contact her about and Sen. Garcia and I probably disagree on most things may have something to do with the difference in response.
