Stabenow can find redemption, maybe...

by: jtcaldwell

Wed Apr 04, 2007 at 22:49:10 PM EDT

(This was a pretty big deal to the Michlib community. Senator Stabenow has come through for us on a wide range of other issues, and I hope that she continues to do so with the Restoring the Constitution Act. - promoted by nirmal)

Shortly before the election in 2006, Senator Stabenow voted for the Military Commissions Act. This was the legislation that, among other things, suspended habeas corpus, insulated torturers from prosecution, and basically shredded one of the most ancient laws of the Western world: the right to a fair trial.
jtcaldwell :: Stabenow can find redemption, maybe...
Her excuse for voting for this despicable law was that although it was not perfect, it was a necessary law (even though most of her Democratic colleagues voted against it). She attempted to justify her vote by stating that there would be new laws that would rectify the injustices (my word, not hers) that this law created.

Now she has the opportunity to make amends for her lapse in judgment. A new piece of legislation has been proposed: Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007 (S. 576). Contact her about this and remind her that she has said she would support legislation like this. Her contact information is:
Senator Debbie Stabenow
133 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510
Phone: (202) 224-4822
e-mail: senator@stabenow.senate.gov

You can read the full bill at http://www.govtrack....

While you're at it, contact your Representative and urge him or her to support the House version: H.R. 1415.

She also voted for the bankruptcy bill... (0.00 / 0)
Now that was a big help to people caught up in the Clinton NAFTA parade.  I would also like to know why spinach growers got pork, and Michigan never gets squat.  If ecoli devastated, one time, spinach growers got help, what help have Levin and Stabenow brought to MIchigan????

Even if she does vote for it now.. (0.00 / 0)
what will she do in the period of 2010-2012, when she knows she is up for re-election?

I will with-hold my opinion until then, but as far as I am concerned, she has opened herself up to the option of a primary challenge in 2012.

And if we make gains in the Senate in 2008, it might be even more likely.

I would also like to add that on election day I didn't vote for Stabenow...and I won't again in 2012 if she pulls something as stupid again.

Something tells me, though, if we control the Senate, she won't be put in a position to take such idiotic stances.

But if I had to pick someone to challenger her in the primary...a certain Governor of the state of Michigan comes to mind...

Luckily for Sen. Stabenow, she'll be four years into her stint as Attorney General of the United States under the Clinton/Edwards/Obama Administration...

'10 primary (0.00 / 0)
What makes you think that certain Gov. wouldn't have voted the same way ?

True, both are DLC (0.00 / 0)

To prepare for when your life flashes before your eyes, make sure it's fun to watch.

If she did... (0.00 / 0)
she would be removed too.

And the primary will be in 2012 for Stabenow.

Stabenow's last term? (0.00 / 0)
For me, Stabenow's vote for the Military Commissions Act was the last straw because-as other comments have pointed out- prior to this unjust law she voted for the bankruptcy bill, and after that, the Constitutional amendment that prohibited flag burning, thereby removing the 1st Amendment.

I was one of several people who posted comments about her Military Commissions vote. Although I was angry with her, I said I would vote for her since we needed a Democrat in that seat; and I urged other angry voters to do the same. I also said that I would work to unseat her so this would be her final term.

So I think we should begin looking for another strong candidate to run against her. How does the name "Senator Granholm" strike you?

okay, i wasn't happy about the bankruptcy bill either... (0.00 / 0)
but a lot of people tend to forget that she has taken other principled stands, like voting against the iraq war when it was hugely unpopular to do so.

Check out my mediocre blog.

Stabenow's Replacement Next Time (0.00 / 0)
This woman's public career has been replete with opportunistic, unprincipled actions, beginning with her time in the Michigan Senate.  We can do much better, and must in the next senatorial election cycle.

and (4.00 / 1)
where will the support for this challenger come from?

Opposition to Stabenow (0.00 / 0)
Christine takes comfort in the difficulty involved with ousting a well entrenched incumbent.  It will no doubt be difficult to replace this unprincipled hack with another candidate, but we have time, and if the members of the liberal community have the passion and energy, it can be done. Look at Joe Liberman. Although he couldn't be upset in the short period of time his opponents had to complete the process, he is a pariah in the Democratic party now, and I predict he is spending his last term in congress.

I don't know why I didn't know better (4.00 / 1)
For some reason I always think I'll be treated differently than someone like Chetly when I ask a perfectly legitimate question. I've got to stop thinking that way.

"Christine takes comfort in the difficulty involved with ousting a well entrenched incumbent."

I'm not going to get into a fight over Debbie again, but that really wasn't called for.  Especially given how hard I try to convince people that every race can be won.

I take comfort in knowing that Debbie is my senator, instead of Bouchard, or Spence Abraham, or some other piece of filth that the other guys put up.

Since I'm pretty confident that neither the party nor the union will support a challenger to Debbie, I was just wondering where you thought the support for your primary candidate will come from.

she can vote... (0.00 / 0)
'til the cows come home.  She's a coward and has no soul.  I'll vote for anyone BUT her.
