Bishop's office: Wizardkitten not the cause of ban

by: Eric B.

Mon Aug 06, 2007 at 13:36:18 PM EDT

A rumor floating around about Blogging for Michigan's blocked access in the state Senate is just that, the chief of staff to Sen. Mike Bishop said today.

The rumor that a specific staffer in the Senate was, in fact, Grand Rapids blogger Wizardkitten started circulating soon after access to Blogging for Michigan was blocked in the state Senate.  The rumor prompted Wizardkitten to unmask herself in a BFM post.

But, Matt Miner, chief of staff for Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, said wizardkitten's identity wasn't the issue.

The issue with wizardkitten is not true. The issue is much more simplistic. We were of the belief that state employees were engaging in blogging on non-state related issues and decided to block access to the site. Our suspicions were confirmed when the Secretary of the Senate received complaints about access to the site.

A subsequent inquiry for additional information -- about what non-state related issues, and how the argument that the decision was prompted by work ethics jibes with comments that criticism of Senate Republicans played some role -- was sent shortly before this posted.  Updates will be made as appropriate depending on responses.

Update!  Miner says last week's MIRS report citing criticism on Blogging for Michigan misquoted him.  From an e-mail today:

Actually, the quote in MIRS is completely inaccurate. My statement to them was "we don't ban sites because they say bad things about Republicans". My example to them was MichiganLiberal.com. They don't always say flattering things about us, which proves my point.

If he was misquoted, he's neglected to inform MIRS.  MIRS news editor Kyle Melinn, in a phone interview this afternoon, says that no one's contacted the news service asking for a correction, and that there are no plans to take the report down from the site's Web site.

Even so... (4.00 / 1)
If the issue was employees engaging in non-work related blog activity while on the clock, why not just speak to the employees in question and ask them to curtail the non-work related blogging?

Doesn't censorship of one blog seem odd?

Exactly (0.00 / 0)
Speaking directly to the employee involved first seems like the better approach.  Banning BFM punishes all the employees, not just the one involved.

Also, my feeling is that all blogs should be banned if they continue to block BFM - including the red ones.

Since when was the Senate Majority leader..... (0.00 / 0)
in charge of monitoring how other senators' staffers spend their time?

That should be left to individual senators to evaluate how their staff spends their time.

Many senators are clearly of the opinion that blogs are a great way to communicate with their constituents.

Which is why, in my mind, this is clearly a First amendment issue, specifically, our right to to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

This is a dodge of the real issue (4.00 / 3)
I'm really not the issue here- the issue is that the Senate Repulicans have blocked a site containing political speech that they did not approve of.

Furthermore, they told Gongwer that the site would be offline until they determined how we got our resources- indicating that they thought it was a staffer.

I'm the one that had been needling them on a daily basis.

Don't fall for their diversion here- this was a block of political speech. Period.

Oh, it's not really a diversion... (0.00 / 0)
I asked him to comment on a rumor that I'd heard and read about, and he responded.

If the stuff I've read in MIRS and Gongwer is true, it seems entirely plausible to me that they're not after an actual blogger, but trying to stop information from leaking.  Then again, this morning I thought this was probably because they thought someone who worked in the Senate was blogging under the name wizardkitten, so everything is obviously subject to change.

Censorship is the issue. (4.00 / 2)
It is the only issue.

They targeted a blog because of political speech.

All the rest of this is fluff and nonsense.

The story is not me. It is Mike Bishop censoring a political blog.

The public record... (0.00 / 0)
The story might be about the blocking of one blog from Senate computers, but this is part of it.  This post seeks to correct the rumor that Senate Republicans blocked Blogging for Michigan in part because they believed that a Senate staffer was, in fact, wizardkitten.  A legitimate outcome of journalistic inquiry is quashing inaccurate rumors.  Making sure that you tell the story correctly is a critical part of telling the story.

The flip side of this is knowing why someone has blocked access to Blogging for Michigan.  Did they do it to prevent information leaks?  Are they doing it to be punitive because you've been critical?  Is it a combination?

Because this guy says so? (0.00 / 0)
Another legitimate outcome of journalistic inquiry is to cut through spin, inconsistencies and double talk. Give us one reason why Bishop's staff, who has said that the site was "created" by the Senate, should be taken as credible now that it the facts have proven him wrong?  Why should anyone believe him?

Right, and the inquiry continues... (0.00 / 0)
If you follow the link to Christine's post, you'll see Matt Miner's statement prompted her to release site traffic logs that wouldn't have otherwise been made public.

TRANSPARENCY (4.00 / 1)
This is what Republicans can't handle when they shut down free speech; they are unwilling to explain why they can't handle free speech by citizens.

They also can't explain why they cannot protect citizens' need for privacy in making speech; what if the bloggers they were targeting are whistle blowers who need protection?  They can't navigate this, either.  Just because somebody collects a paycheck from public coffers doesn't mean they aren't entitled to the same rights as those of us who aren't.

And what does funding here have to do with any of this?  Michigan Liberal and Blogging for Michigan are vehicles by which Michigan citizens exercise their free speech; what does it matter who funded their exercise of this Constitutional right??

Go Scooter, Go Scooter (4.00 / 2)
I think Liberal Lucy nailed when she called "Miner, Michigan's own Scooter Libby."

Matt Miner... (0.00 / 0)
Is a liar and now he's just backtracking because he said something incredibly stupid.

Putting conservatives in charge of our government makes about as much sense as GM hiring a CEO who hates cars.
