Mark Schauer May Run in the 7th?

by: lpackard

Wed Aug 08, 2007 at 19:35:51 PM EDT

Yesterday, an interesting snippet appeared in MIRS about Senate Minority Leader Mark Schauer and Congress. People have long been talking about him as a candidate in the 7th, but not of late (I think most folks had figured he truly wasn't interested). MIRS stated that Schauer would contact Berryman and Nacht within 24 hours with his decision - on whether he'd "seriously consider" running for Congress or not. This would be big news if true, because it means the idea is back on the table.

So I decided to do a little investigating. A search on the domain name schauerforcongress.com shows that it was purchased August 3rd. My sources confirm that it was one of the good guys who bought it.

And now here's an article hot off the presses from the Associated Press. According to the AP, Schauer is discussing a bid for Congress with family, colleagues and constituents before making a "final decision."

Also from the article:

Former Rep. Joe Schwarz, R-Battle Creek, said Wednesday he spoke to Schauer earlier in the day and the state senator told him "he was looking at" the congressional race. Schwarz said Schauer did not indicate when he would make a final decision.

What do you think? Should he run? Since he hasn't announced that he's running - only that he's thinking about it - now would be the time to let him know if you want him to go forward.

UPDATE: Today's MIRS references a poll from the DCCC that shows him beating Walberg in a head-to-head match-up by 3 points. Once positives and negatives are given, Schauer's margin grows to as much as 8 percentage points.

Check out my mediocre blog.

i should elaborate... (4.00 / 2)
I don't live in the 7th, so to an extent I'm not in a place to comment about this race.  I'd also be happy with just about any Democrat instead of Walberg.

But from an online movement building perspective, I would absolutely be behind Schauer.  He shares our values (like openness/transparency), was an early participant in our community, and we know that he's willing to defend us.  He's been saying all of the same things that we have on the budget issue.  Other than possibly the Governor, we'd be hard-pressed to find a better ally.

Check out my mediocre blog.

Run Mark, Run. (4.00 / 1)
Run Mark, Run.

See Mark Run.

Mark Runs Hard.

Mark Runs Fast.

See Tim Run.

Tim Runs Badly.

Tim Falls Down.

See Mark Win.

Bye Bye Tim!

The end.

On a more Serious Note (4.00 / 3)
Schauer is the complete package as far as I am concerned:

1) Progressive
2) Smart
3) Politically Savvy
4) Willing to stand on principle
5) Established Base -- His Senate District is wholly contained within the Congressional District
6) Proven vote getter -- won three times in a 50/50 House seat, twice in a leaning Repub. Senate Seat.
7) Proven Fundraiser -- raised over $6 million for the Senate Dems last cycle.

We should do everything we can to encourage him to run.  Spread the word in the online community, and talk it up in the broader political community.  Let Schauer, and the "powers that be" know, that we, in the online community, are ready to help win this and help in a big way.

If he goes to Washington (0.00 / 0)
Who will replace him in Lansing? Who would run from both sides?

Success is not final, failure is not fatal. - Winston Churchill

Woooohooooo Let's Go Mark! (4.00 / 3)
Mark is the right guy at the right time to take down a nemisis of our state. Walberg is worse than a right-wing loon, he's downright scary. Schauer would be a strong candidate in any race. He raises the cash, works hard, and does a good job with media--online and the MSM. More importantly, he shares our values. He has a prooven ability to work across the aisle, too. He already gets elected in a pretty Republican district. We know Walberg's vulnerable and ripe for the picking. If anyone can do it, it's Schauer. Run, run, run!

Count me in (4.00 / 3)
I'm not exactly the 'voice of the blogosphere' since I don't post very often, but I have to say I'm pretty excited about the prospect of Schauer jumping in. As Walberg Watch regularly points out, "Tiny-minded Tim" is a total disgrace for everyone in the 7th, and with his comments about how Iraq is as safe as Detroit and "supporting" efforts he doesn't end up voting for, he's really an embarrassment for the entire state.

Schauer has proven that he's not afraid to say what needs to be said and stand up to the bullies (you hear that, Mike Bishop?). I think he's the best choice for conitnuing to lead us to a budget fix and lead us to a change in the south/mid-Michigan congressional seat.

Run, Mark, Run!

Mark Schauer = A Blogger's Best Friend (4.00 / 2)
Sen. Schauer is amazing. He's been keeping Mike Bishop on his toes all year, and when our free speech was under attack this week he had our backs the whole time.

The guy is intelligent, progressive, well-liked in the district, and knows the difference between Baghdad and Detroit.

In other words, he's everything Tim Walberg isn't.

Come on, Mark... let's do this!

The less you know, the more you believe.

Is it Christmas??? (4.00 / 3)
Seriously, I feel like I just found the parental present stash on the night before Christmas and I just know that there's something good in one of the packages:  A True Progressive Patriot Action Figure!!!

To quote jrjr, "Run Mark, Run!"

As much as I'd love to see Sen. Schauer run for Gov in 2010, this would be almost as good.  If I have to, I'll move to the District so I can vote and volunteer.

Do stupid people know they are stupid?

Hey now... (0.00 / 0)
That's no way to welcome Walberg's Chief-of-Staff Joe Wicks to the blogosphere!? Just because we haven't seen him before doesn't mean we won't be hearing quite a bit from jackietreehorn-Joe if Schauer decides to run.

No endorsement yet (4.00 / 2)
Officially, I'm staying neutral, as is Walberg Watch. But I will say that this means I might have to exchange my "Mark Schauer for Governor 2010" banner for something else...

I like him a lot, and I'll be curious to see what happens.

Schauer's the guy (4.00 / 2)
He's been our best ally in the Legislature. Schauer's promotion to the federal level could only help us more. We can expect a win in '08 with him on the ballot. When can I stuff envelopes?

DCCC Support (0.00 / 0)
Looks like the DCCC is trying to pressure Mark into taking this one by leaking a poll, maybe even registering that domain.

I'd rather see him run for Gov, we really need someone strong for that race.

I don't have a horse in this race... (0.00 / 0)
...as I'm in the 9th, of course, but you can't think that way; once you start doing so, you drive yourself to distraction.

He may be an excellent candidate for Governor in 2010, but the issue at hand is 2008. 2 years is an eternity in politics; any number of other great Democratic candidates for Governor in '10 could arise by that time. Right now we need to concentrate on '08.

As for his primary opponents--I don't know much about David Nacht--I met him briefly at yKos, he seems like a good guy, but that's about all I know so far, as I missed the most-recent Bloggers Caucus at the last State convention. I know that he somehow managed to raise a lot of money last quarter--more than Walberg, which is impressive--but that's all I really know so far, so I can't address his candidacy. He's evidently been endorsed by Robert Reich, which is a nice feather in his cap, for what it's worth.

My point is that the only "justification" (from our POV) for Schauer sitting out an '08 Congress run in favor of a 2010 gubernatorial run would be if Nacht, Berryman, Renier or whoever has the same chance of beating Walberg that Schauer does, which I presume isn't the case.

Meanwhile, Schauer certainly impressed me earlier this week with his solid, pro-freedom of speech/pro-blogger response to Mike Bishop's asinine BFM blocking.

This would be quite a swing for that district... (4.00 / 2)
Going from a certifiable loon to Mark Schauer.

Should he run?  Well, he'd continue a tradition of legislators that the state could take justifiable pride in sending to Washington.

Construction Laborers' Union Supports Schauer (4.00 / 4)
I do live in the 7th CD in Calhoun County and would like to offer the following comments.

Senator Schauer has been proactive in efforts to increase the quality of life for working families in this state.

Senator Schauer has character, honesty, discipline, strength and an extraordinary ability to use common sense approaches to get work done.

I have know Senator Schauer for many years and he has withstood the tests of time and shown the tenacity to finish, rather than others who have given up or caved in.

The Michigan Laborers' District Council is energized about the idea of Senator Schauer running for Congress and is prepared to support his candidacy 110%.

I can't remember the last time I was truly enthusiastic about a race in the 7th Congressional District.

Without playing favorites (4.00 / 1)
Sen. Schauer is one of the most respected legislators in Lansing, on both sides of the aisle.

A true grassroots activist and as displayed by his willingness to welcome the netroots community, he's very open minded and forward-thinking.

Mark Schauer would excel in whatever role he takes on here in Michigan whether it's in Congress or in the Executive Office, or just continuing on as Democratic Leader in the State Senate.

I just wish Michigan had more leaders like Schauer.

I want to change the world, not help people adjust to it. - Millie Jeffrey, MI - National Women's labor and Democratic activist, Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient

Keep him in Lansing! (4.00 / 1)
I'm all for Mr. Schauer running, except for one thing: We have a budget crisis! Its August, and we don't have a budget for next year (Which starts in SIX weeks!!), and if Schauer abandons the legislature in favor of this congressional run, Bishop will get everything he wants, not just in the budget, but we'll never get another bill through the senate! I'm totally against Walberg, he isn't doing a thing for us in Calhoun Co., but at the same time, can we afford to loose his leadership in the Senate? Wouldn't it be better if he ran for Gov in 2010, or waited until 2010 to run for Congress? We need his leadership to help take back the Senate and keep these GOP'ers in check. We were lucky to have his leadership this week with the blog-banning issue. If he ran off to Washington, those of you in Lansing probably would be reading this!

To get something done, a committee should consist of no more than three men, two of whom are absent. - Copeland

Yes, Yes, Yes! (4.00 / 1)
Send him to DC.  There he'll be able to get something done.  Chairman Bishop has no interest in doing anything in Lansing except wasting time and money.  Go get, em Senator!

Senator, if you run you'll win. Not just because you're the best candidate, or because you posses the rare ability to bring people together.  No, you'll win because no one works harder to serve the people of Michigan than you do.  And no one works harder to earn votes.

I've had the chance to volunteer for your campaigns in the past.  They are like no other campaign I've ever been on.  There's more energy and more people than any other race I've seen.

On a selfish note, I hope you run so I can be apart of what will be one of the most exciting races in the country.  Volunteering on, and winning a race like this is going to be the stuff I'll tell my grandchildren about.

Tell me where Senator.  I'll be there ready to GO!

The long view (4.00 / 2)
We need to calm down a little about this one.

While it would be great if Senator Schauer ran, it would also be bad for these reasons:
1) Schauer would have to vacate (or spend much less time at) his post as Senate Democratic leader, leaving us rudderless in the Senate when he's needed most.
2) If Senator Schauer were to beat Walberg, that would create a vacancy in his Senate seat. At least temporarily, that gives Republicans a larger majority in the State Senate.
3) Worse, there would have to be a special election for his senatorial seat. The sad truth is that Right to Life and conservative zealots are much more effective about getting their core people to the polls during special elections. Given that he holds a Republican seat, it is more than likely that a Republican will regain that seat in the special election. Since it would be less than half a term (4 years) until the next election - 2010 - that Republican could run for reelection in 2010 and 2014. You would have Republican control of the seat for almost 10 years!

I say this not to take a shot at Schauer. But we need to slow down a second before the "Run Mark Run" hysteria takes control of our reason. There are two impressive candidates in the field already.

Look at this Long Veiw (0.00 / 0)
Yes, let's look at the long veiw.  Schauer can serve two more years in the Senate Minority or he can give us our best shot at beating one of Congress' most right wing members, help solidify a Democratic majority in Congress and possibly be a progressive voice in Congress for 25 years.  Which do you prefer?

[ Parent ]
Seriously? (0.00 / 0)
You would rather have him in the minority in the state senate, than in the majority in Congress.  You would rather have Walberg in the Congress, than have to fight a special election for his senate seat?

You've sent this post all over,  it's the third place I've seen it.  Come on.

Mike Nofs (0.00 / 0)
Nofs has got to be salivating while this debate is going on, maybe even donating to Mr. Schauers campaign fund! He will win Schauers senate seat in either a general or special election. We have the governor, we have the house, but the obstructionist Bishop will make our lives awful if we have an even slimmer minority in the senate.
At this point, I really think Berryman is the way to go. Does anyone remember when he ran against Nick Smith? He did really well. I for one think that if 2008 is anything like 2006, and we actually help our candidate we have a great chance of winning this seat regardless of who the candidate is.

Berryman was crushed against Smith (0.00 / 0)
While I agree about Nofs, Berryman was crushed back in 98. Smith strugged in one election, but I think it was in 1996 against someone else. Berryman almost took 50% in Lenawee, but lost big elsewhere.

1998
Smith - 104,656
Berryman - 72,998

I DO think Berryman is a tough matchup for Walberg however - maybe tougher than Schauer as I think Schauer was strongest in 04 and has weakened a bit since then because of tax issues.

To respond to your comments, yes I did not post in several places. I don't know why that should detract from the argument.

I have seen many postings across the blogosophere that have the mantra of "Go Mark Go" without really considering the cons associated with him running. I am not opposed to the senator, and I wish him well if he chooses to run (I am no fan of Walberg). But there are downsides ... So, if I am perusing the blogosphere and see one-sided arguments in favor (perhaps coordinated by Schauer's people, perhaps not), I feel obligated to inject my concerns. I thought that was what blogs are all about ... a frank, but civil discussion of the issues.

To be quite frank, I wish people would not get so worked up about trivial matters such as this. It's just my opinion. If you don't agree, that's your choice. I would hope you would respond with your view rather than insinuating that something nefarious is going on.

I meant to say, "yes I did post the comment in several places" not "yes I did not" (the latter of which makes no sense). I apologize for the typo.
