Ms Granholm, I will NOT accept the loss of 174k Jobs

by: Gaspare

Mon Nov 24, 2008 at 15:21:39 PM EST

I will not accept the loss of one more job.  Why do I get the sense that you are the only one fighting to bring new jobs to the state of Michigan?  Why do I and the citizens of Michigan have to accept projections of the loss of 174k more jobs in 2009?
I'm fed up and getting down right angry that over and over and over again, we have to tighten our belts, and pull together, and hang on yet one more year.  Since when did any of this talk become acceptable?

Change and The Auto Bailout: Mission Accomplished?

by: TomChoske

Tue Nov 18, 2008 at 11:16:18 AM EST

Change We Can Believe In. Isn't that what Americans turned out in droves to support a couple of weeks ago? Weren't there throngs of people on all sides of the political spectrum who wanted to see 'change' in Washington, either by Barack Obama or John McCain (or Nader/Barr/McKinney)? If so, why then is there a decided lack of change now?

Despite the clamoring of the Talking Heads and the Media of how we have entered a new phase as a country and nation, the political establishment in Washington seems intent on retaining its old ways: bickering and listening to special interests over the voice of the American people. Case in point: The Big Three bailout.

I won't bore you with the statistics. The economy's already going to hell in a hand basket- we all know that. And this readership is well aware that the millions jobs that will vanish if we do nothing are not just in Michigan, but all over our great country, affecting union and non-union workers, people with Doctorates and MBAs all the way to just GEDs, but Americans all. However, we see lukewarm treatments of the auto bailout from the DC political powerhouses. Don't they know what will happen if we don't act? Are they seriously that blind?

No, they are simply stagnant in their ways. The Democratic leadership, far from changing to reflect the mainstream voice of the American people, has instead fell back on its standard high-horse that Detroit cars destroy the environment, and that any bailout must impose more government regulation on the cars they design and produce, leading to the same problems that have plagued the companies for years: a design focused on CAFE standards and not the consumer. The Republicans want to draw 'a line in the sand' against "economic socialism", a standby of conservatism- but of course this does not apply to them bailing out their hedge fund buddies; that is.

Barack Obama has been very vocal and adamant in his support for helping to protect American jobs. The people support him. The News/Free Press conducted a poll saying that the majority of Americans are not opposed to using part of the $700 billion to help out industries beyond Wall Street- including the auto companies. However, we still see opposition in Washington. It's clear that this 'wave of change' that swept the nation crashed just short of the shores of DC.

It's now up to us. As Obama said in his victory speech, the campaign to change America is not over, and it now rests with each and every American to make change in their own way. The best way we can do that now is make it clear to each and every representative of the American people: listen to us, or you will be flooded with e-mails, letters, protesters, and the entire spectrum of brute popular political force until you relent, or are out of office.

On the Eve of the Election: Obama Closes Campaign with 7-Point Lead

November 3, 2008. Washington, DC. As Americans head to the polls tomorrow, the final national survey from Democracy Corps and Greenberg Quinlan Rosner shows Obama with a stable and decisive lead in the race for president. But there is much more going on that will likely produce an even bigger outcome. The structure of Obama's support is untouched by the closing campaign, with considerable evidence of rising confidence in Obama over McCain on taxes, the economy and the financial crisis that are themselves growing more central in predicting the vote. With surging enthusiasm and solidity of Obama's voters and a growing partisan advantage impacting races at all levels, more than a few barriers will likely be broken on November 4th.

Obama is ahead in the race for president in our last poll that was conducted Thursday night, Saturday morning and Sunday night with 1,000 likely voters nationwide by a 7-point margin: 51 to 44 percent, with 3 percent undecided and 4 percent voting for 3rd parties (Nader at 2 percent and Barr at 1 percent).

We project, however, when all is said and done that Obama will lead 53 to 44 percent, with 4 percent for 3rd party candidates...

Match My Donation: Put W's Stimulus Check to Good Use

by: gregsullmich

Fri Oct 17, 2008 at 07:40:28 AM EDT

Just a few months ago, the Bush Administration sent me a $600 Economic Stimulus Payment. By sending such payments to taxpayers, this Administration thought it could jump-start the economy.

This stimiulus program has proven to be a miserable failure. I put my stimulus payment into the bank, where it has drawn a paltry interest, far less than the rate at which price inflation is eating it away. Thank goodness I didn't put it into my mutual fund, where it would have lost far more of its value.

I have decided that the only way I can help stimulate the economy is to help Barack Obama get elected, and bring real change to our economy and to our nation. So, yesterday I took that stimulus money out of the bank and I donated it to his campaign. I hope all his supporters will consider doing the same.

Michigan GOP in Total Meltdown

by: GoBlueMich02

Thu Oct 09, 2008 at 14:05:20 PM EDT

(Ruh-roh! - promoted by LiberalLucy)

Yesterday morning, I received this email from the Michigan GOP (yes, I am on their e-mail list..need to keep up with the other side!) :

Dear ___
Today, you may have received an email from a disgruntled former employee, Justin Zatkoff,  that is an example of game-playing that is distracting from our efforts this fall.  It has been leaked to the press and being circulated by the same old group of troublemakers who are more interested in intra-party political silliness than helping Republicans win general elections.

Obama Signs Vandalized in East Lansing - Yours Too?

by: Bluesman Johnson

Wed Oct 08, 2008 at 16:53:25 PM EDT

Obama signs all around my East Lansing neighborhood (Glencarin-Chesterfield-MSU area) have been getting torn up, littered about, and the metal holders are getting twisted up and strewn about.  I counted six on my three block street alone.

Just wondering:  anyone else having this happen around the Lansing area, or was this just the work of some angry drunken frat boy?

HEADS UP! Make Every Vote Count!

by: William Allen Simpson

Thu Sep 11, 2008 at 06:49:02 AM EDT

Lose your house, lose your vote

Help Us Make Every Vote Count!

In the meantime, everybody should call your TV stations and newspapers across the state. Write letters to the editor. Publicize this as widely as possible -- how cruel, how cynical. This is not about protecting the sanctity of the vote. They're trying to win an election on the backs of the unfortunate.

Remember, you can vote even after your house has burned down, even after moving to another city, another county, another state, or another country.

There's no requirement that you have a mailing address. You can live in a cardboard box, or on a grate, or in an alley.

Enforcement will require a court order. You are only protected by having enough money to go to court, or banding together for enforcement.

ALERT:Michigan Republicans Foreclosing Your Vote!

by: The Blue State Bandit

Wed Sep 10, 2008 at 14:36:32 PM EDT

If you have lost your home due to foreclosure in Michigan, the Republicans plan to deny your right to vote! This is not a joke, and it may not be happening in just Michigan.

The chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County Michigan, a key swing county in a key swing state, is planning to use a list of foreclosed homes to block people from voting in the upcoming election as part of the state GOP’s effort to challenge some voters on Election Day.

"We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren’t voting from those addresses," party chairman James Carabelli told Michigan Messenger in a telephone interview earlier this week. He said the local party wanted to make sure that proper electoral procedures were followed.

Featured McCain Convert is an Israel Basher

by: NoviDemocrat

Fri Sep 05, 2008 at 23:53:33 PM EDT

John McCain has been quick to highlight "liberals" who are publicly supporting him over Barack Obama. Among those featured was Laurel Federbush of Ann Arbor. Federbush was quoted in this article about McCain's appearance in Detroit today.

"McCain and Palin were greeted at Metro Airport earlier in the afternoon by two Democrats, who said they’ll vote for McCain. ... The other, Laurel Federbush, of Ann Arbor described herself as a left wing independent, who supported Dennis Kucinich for president during the primary season. She said she liked McCain’s opposition to torture during interrogations on prisoners."

If Federbush was selected by the McCain campaign, it appears that they once again failed in their vetting. McCain's supporter from Ann Arbor turns out to be a basher of US support for Israel whose behavior has been less than civil.

AMERICAN DESPAIR: Watching the River Flow

by: Maryscott O'Connor

Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 16:14:14 PM EDT

Crossposted from MY LEFT WING

Adam and I are hardened old cynics at this point.

But Terry was born on December 7th, 1999. He has never NOT KNOWN a time when George W. Bush wasn't President.

And we've been sitting on the couch after Adam gets home from work, watching the DVR playback of the convention highlights... both of us WEEPING LIKE CHILDREN. Holding hands, looking at each other occasionally, realising that we LOST OUR GODDAMNED COUNTRY when they stole that election... and we knew it, we knew we knew it, but we DIDN'T KNOW what we didn't know.

Oh, we railed, we thundered at the television, we shushed each other because the baby was sleeping, then we'd go out to the patio and whisper-shout at the heavens at the INJUSTICE of it all...

But we just DIDN'T REALISE what would happen -- HOW COULD WE??? And we sit on the couch watching this Democratic Convention...

And we weep.

persondem was asking the community for slogans...which got me to thinking, “why not?”

Obama in Michigan TODAY!!

by: surferdudedetroit

Mon Jun 16, 2008 at 10:00:34 AM EDT

Are you attending the Obama event Monday?  We are doing a project for his visit.

I am a Democrat and am hurting because of the high price of gasoline.

Today, on this Father's Day, I was thinking about whether I could afford to put new shingles on my roof and decided to hold off for now because of the rising price of gas.  It is now well over $4.00 a gallon and supposedly only going higher.

I supported Governor Granholm for re-election in 2006 and appreciated her hard work in trying to lower the price of a gallon of gas.  She formed a petition drive and hundreds of thousands of Michigan voters signed it urging President Bush to take action on this critical problem.

Recently, Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator McCain endorsed the temporary repeal of the federal gas tax that would have saved Michigan workers approximately 20 cents per gallon of gas over the summer.

Unfortunately, Senator Obama opposed the temporary repeal of the gas tax.  But there is still time left to change his mind.  He is coming to Michigan tomorrow and we think we can convince him to endorse the gas tax repeal if enough Michigan voters urge him.  Our goal is to get 1000 signatures.  Will you help?

Therefore, instead of spending time working outside today, I have formed a petition drive, similar to Governor Granholm's from 2006, that urges Barack Obama to join Senators Clinton and McCain in support of the temporary repeal of the gas tax.

We are hurting here in Michigan and we need the help!

Please click http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/gastaxrepeal/ and join me in signing the gas tax repeal petition that will be given to Senator Obama this week in Michigan.

Please also forward this email to your friends and ask them to sign!

Sincerely,

James Allen

CD07: Walberg Watch Improvement Thread

by: Fitzy

Mon Jun 16, 2008 at 03:02:38 AM EDT

 Hi.

Many of you read Walberg Watch, my blog, which is great. I hope you appreciate the posts I've written and others have written, and I can promise a lot more in the coming months as we all work to replace Congressman Walberg with a much better representative.

Still, I want to do more than just write blog posts. I want to provide resources for you to use when working to convince others that Walberg has to go. In fact, I want to provide resources to convince you that Walberg has to go if you're an undecided voter. I want to make sure that on election day, you get out there and vote. I want to make sure that when Tim Walberg and his friends start to smear his Democratic opponent with lies and half-truths, there's an immediate response. And I want you to be able to help contribute content toward this goal, because any good political effort is the result of many people standing up, not just a few.

Hillary Clinton's letter in support of Obama

by: Gaspare

Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 09:25:31 AM EDT

Yesterday, I sent Hillary Clinton an email message at her website admiring her awesome barrier breaking campaign and appreciating her contribution to the presidential nominating process. I also asked her to please(and I did write please);end her campaign so that we can begin to unify as a Democratic party.  So, I don't know if others are on her e-mail list, etc but in the extended Text I cut and pasted the letter she has sent her supporters. No matter what happens, whether Hillary does become President or not some day, her candidacy will be cited as the barrier breaking event that laid the groundwork for a woman to become President of the United States. To me, that is no small thing. Yes, history has been made with regard to Obama becoming the first major African-American nominee for President of the United States.  But there is also serious historical resonance to Hillary's campaign as the first serious woman candidate for President of the United States.

Re-launching the Progressive Directory of Western Michigan

by: mediamousegr

Fri May 09, 2008 at 13:43:04 PM EDT

Over the past month, Mediamouse.org has been hard at work updating and revising the Progressive Directory of Western Michigan and are excited to be re-launching it.

It is a project that we inherited from the Grand Rapids Institute for Information Democracy (GRIID) back in 2007 when GRIID moved to Mediamouse.org. In the years since the Directory was initially created in 2003, it had become quite out of date, with many of the groups that are listed becoming inactive or contact information changing.

However, we are pleased to announce that the Directory has been completely updated and revised. We now list over 100 groups in the West Michigan area that are working broadly on progressive/left social change efforts. It is obviously quite difficult to determine what is "progressive" or "left", but we believe that the groups listed are doing generally solid work that will be of interest to people looking to get involved in social change work.

We also have written a new mission statement that is more consistent with what we are doing here at Mediamouse.org: "The Progressive Directory of Western Michigan connects people with groups that are working towards a more egalitarian world/community with the goal of encouraging folks to get involved." We are hoping that the Directory will be one vehicle through which people will get involved in local activism.

Moreover, we have changed the way the Directory is maintained. Rather than being an "opt-in" Directory in which groups are required to join a listserv and participate in networking that previously (although not for several years) included monthly meetings, we now just list mission statements and general contact information in order to keep the information more current.

Please check out the directory and add any groups that we may have missed.
