President Obama gave a speech the other day and had one of the best themes I've heard in a long time, Grab a Mop. Some College Democrats took up the rallying cry and delivered mops to their local Republcian offices.
This is a very cool event that the College Democrats at U of M put on each year. The food is good, the company is great and we need to support the college efforts.
4th Annual Pancake Breakfast Special Guests Congressman John Dingell & Debbie Dingell 9:30am-11am Arbor Brewing Company
Ann Arbor, MI – On Saturday, April 18, the College Democrats at the University of Michigan will hold the 4th Annual Pancake Breakfast with special guests Congressman John Dingell and Debbie Dingell. The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Arbor Brewing Company in Ann Arbor.
For four years, the College Democrats have been proud to partner with Congressman Dingell and Arbor Brewing Company for this fundraiser. In addition to these two sponsors, the Pancake Breakfast also welcomes the Washtenaw County Democrats, 15th Congressional District Democrats, and Speaker Pro-tempore Pam Byrnes as event sponsors. “The Pancake Breakfast is an essential event for our organization,” said Tom Duvall, vice chair of the College Democrats. “Each year, the Pancake Breakfast forms a bridge between the College Democrats and the greater Ann Arbor Community.”

This is Chris, from the Michigan Federation of College Democrats reporting live from the MFCD Make It Happen Bus. Thanks to a newly purchased verizon internet card, look out for live updates throught the course of the week. Friday, the Make It Happen tour, which is graciously sponsored by Lt. Governor John Cherry kicked off forcefully. With a stop at Monroe CCC and then a huge kickoff event with the UofM Dems Friday, MFCD continued to crawl over to the sunny 7th CD.
Obama's message of hope and change has reached out to millions of young voters, and I do not understand how some people can not understand why. Republicans think it might have to do with the age of the candidate, so they bring in Palin. Now, she may be "young," but she certainly does not bring nearly the same understanding to issues that concern youth voters the most as Obama does.
With a young population experiencing piled-up college debt and the pressure of finding new jobs, they refuse to believe that a continuation of the current administration could be the solution, especially since John McCain barely shares the compassion Obama does for education and job growth. Our youth have also become disillusioned by the failed policies of the Iraq War and have felt the stress of escalating costs of health care within their families. Who deals with these issues with an eye out for how we feel? I don't see McCain caring much about what we think. The latest Gallup polls from September 7 reveal our thoughts exactly--60% favor Obama while only 32% favor McCain.
But putting all political affiliation aside, will youth participation shock us this election season?
There are the first two installments of a bi-weekly series put together by the University of Michigan College Democrats and the Michigan Democratic Party Youth Caucus.
Below is an email sent out from Derek Dobies at the MDP, on behalf of the MFCD. Hope to see some activism!!
Hey everyone,
Chris Stergalas (MFCD Treasurer) and I have been working really hard to organize some sort of Michigan Federation of College Democrats (MFCD) Convention for the 2008 cycle in Flint that will be concurrent with the State Central meeting. While we have not yet been able to secure a meeting place, we wanted to make sure that the MFCD could hold elections to select a new Executive Board for the 2008-2009 cycle.
Chris suggested the idea that, since it would be difficult for all College Dem Chapters (especially those in the UP) to make it to one central location at the same time, we should provide for online elections. As a result, we will be asking people who are interested in running for an Executive Board position on the MFCD to visit the following site:
http://michigandems.com/mfcd
Here, people will be able to submit their contact information, the office they wish to run for, as well as a brief summary of their qualifications for that office. Chris and I will be gathering the information and compiling it into a Candidate FAQ (much like the League of Women Voters puts out), and distributing it to the various chapters over the weekend of February 16th.
Please schedule a meeting with your school's chapter sometime on the week of February 18th to hold elections. Voting will be closed at 5pm on February 22nd, and we will announce the new Executive Board on the 23rd. Voting procedures will be outlined in a subsequent email.
Again, free free to distribute the above link to your membership lists, and post it on your Facebook pages or Homepages. We hope to have a plethora of qualified candidates come the 15th!
Hope to see you apply! Contact either myself or Chris Stergalas (castergalas@gmail.com) with questions.
The Michigan Federation of College Democrats is coming to your neck of the woods, and soon!
The MFCD is going on a bus tour! That's right, we're boarding a bus (well actually a Ford E-350) and stopping all over the state to meet with college students and local activists in many different regions. The 'Students First Tour' will be bringing attention to the tuition increases caused by everyone's favorite State Legislator, Mike Bishop and help to gather signatures and support from students in support of Senate Bill 518, which will repeal the Mike Rogers Bill that prohibits students from voting on their college campuses unless their state ID matches their campus address. In addition we will work to obtain a comprehensive database that of college activists that can assist us in events in 2008, so that we can all work together for stronger victories and provide information to students on how to register to vote.
Small amounts of information will be given to students at our stops about Presidential candidates, although much has been withdrawn from our original itinerary.. for obvious reasons.

Joining together in a state that doesn't sell liquor after 7pm, doesn't sell anything but food until after 2pm on Sunday and that proudly flies the Confederate flag in front of the capitol this past weekend were hundreds of college democrats from around the country.
I am proud to announce my candidacy for MDP Youth Caucus Chair here on Michiganliberal.com
I will kick-off my campaign talking with Democrats in Washtenaw County this Friday at 6:30 PM. I look forward to the conversation and debate. I hope you can stop by.

As a former President of the MSU Democrats I want to take the opportunity to defend the organization in light of some recent questions that have popped up on this and other blogs regarding our activities. In a recent post about the Young Americans for Freedom, the MSU Democrats were called "disorganized to a degree that would be comical if it weren't tragic." I have to disagree completely.
The MSU Democrats actually have a very sophisticated field program, thanks to the services of Practical Political Consulting. Every fall we do targeted voter registration drives, persuasion knocks on all independents, leaners, and Democrats, and a GOTV campaign on Election Day plus the several days before hand. All told, we will knock more than 8,000 doors, many of them two to three times before Election Day and another two to three times on election day. That's more than 30,000 doors knocked in two months and by any measure that is impressive. [More after the jump]
