Idealism vs. Realism

by: rchsdems

Fri Nov 07, 2008 at 12:28:50 PM EST

In hearing the recent news of Rep. Waxman's interest in taking the House Committee on Energy and Commerce's top job, I was a bit puzzled by a few things.

Being a  huge Congress nerd, I am very familiar with Rep. Waxman as well as his accomplishments in the House.  But with that, I also am familiar with Rep. John Dingell's record.

Our country, our state, and our government would be in such worse positions if it were not for Congressman Dingell's record of leadership and accomplishment throughout his tenure in the House.

Support the man who has supported us.

by: spontoni

In the immediate aftermath of a historic campaign driven by a nationwide outcry for change, Democrats have been accorded a comprehensive policy mandate they have anxiously awaited during the last two presidential terms.  But change is nothing new for the Democrats; the Party has worked for the passing of progressive policies since its birth centuries ago, which is why Americans turned to the Democrats when they desperately demanded meaningful social, economic, and political change.

Republicans have ruined everything, or How the economic crisis hit home for me

by: Fifey

Tue Oct 21, 2008 at 18:49:23 PM EDT

(This is one of the many reasons I blog - to share and read personal stories about how the (in)actions of those in DC and Lansing affect ordinary people. - promoted by ScottyUrb)

For the record, I was against the bailout. I wrote a handful of emails to my Representative, John Dingell and both Senator Stabenow and Senator Levin. I made phone calls begging for them to vote against the bailout. I was convinced that sending almost a trillion dollars to some of the very people that got us into this mess was a very bad idea. I firmly believe then, and still do now that the only real way to help Wall Street is to conduct criminal investigations and do something to kick them of the bad habits they got adicted to (like trading and inflating the price of the complex economic devices that got us in this jam). I wrote to the Obama campaign asking that he not vote for the bailout. In the end, as we all know, my efforts were futile and the bailout passed.

I'd like to think that I know a little about hard economic times. I was born in Louisiana in the early 1980s where my father worked as a helicopter mechanic for PHI. In 1985 we moved to Michigan when the oil company ran into hard times and my father was forced to look elsewhere for work. He came to work for General Motors as a mechanic for their corporate helicopter and airplanes at Metro Airport.

For the first few years, we rented as we had difficulty selling our house down in Louisiana. With the economy is turmoil, it was nearly impossible to find a buyer for the decently-sized house of which we were the original owners. In the end, we sold the house back to the bank and lost about $30,000 on the deal.

In my childhood here in Michigan I grew up in a typical middle-class household. In addition to my father's work at GM, we had some income from my mother who worked as a preschool administrator and a Head Start director in a poor school district, before finally finding the job she's held for over a decade as a second grade teacher. We weren't rich, but there was always food on the table. I would later come to realize how hard my parents worked, and how much they sacrificed so that my little sister and I always had what we needed. We might have had hand-me-down clothes from cousins and I might have had a job since I was 14 to help offset bills and expenses, but I never knew the fear of losing our home.

Ebling and You: Barack Rocks Lansing

by: Jack Ebling

Tue Aug 05, 2008 at 08:54:41 AM EDT

Barack Obama made a stop at the Lansing Center on Monday, August 4, 2008. WILS's Jack Ebling was there and talked to many Michigan Democratic Party members in attendance, including U.S. Congressman John Dingell, Senator Debbie Stabenow, Lansing Mayor Verg Bernero and Teamsters President James Hoffa Jr.

Dingell says the Primary was worth it

by: yvette248

Tue Jan 15, 2008 at 21:33:35 PM EST

Ok, I'm almost afraid to post this here due to the heat of public opinion regarding our primary problems.

Yet, according to Debbie Dingell, it was all worth it. Could she be right?

"That was what it was all about," General Motors Corp. executive Dingell said of why she and other political leaders in the state pushed Michigan's primary up early despite the $10 million price tag, plenty of angry Democratic voters and threats of serious repercussions from the national parties.

"Everybody loves to bash the domestic auto industry," said Dingell, who is the wife of U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Dearborn. "But they come here and can see the technology, and then suddenly they see that the domestic manufacturers are making better products than anybody else. That is what happened."

The shift to Michigan also brought a shift in candidates' messages. While the war in Iraq was at the forefront in earlier primaries, Republican candidates wooing Michigan were forced to shift their focus to job losses, manufacturing and the state's unique-in-the-nation recession.

SCHIP Rally Tomorrow at GOP Presidential Debate in Dearborn

by: rchsdems

Mon Oct 08, 2007 at 16:19:53 PM EDT

(See previous SCHIP story here. If you can't make it to the rally, be sure to contact your congressperson directly and give them your opinion on this bill. - promoted by lpackard)

With Bush's veto of the SCHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program) bill, the House will be voting on Oct. 18 to attempt to override the veto.  Congressman Dingell, one of the largest advocates for children's healthcare in Congress will be hosting a rally tomorrow, Oct. 9 at 1:00pm at the Ford Performing arts Center in Dearborn, during the Republican Presidential Debate.

The rally is intended to make all of the GOP candidates, GOP supporters and media aware of the need for guaranteed health care for all children in the nation, and that President Bush was completely wrong in vetoing this great bill.

The Congressman will be joined by supporters and friends, to help bring attention to this very necessary bill.

The event will be held at the Ford Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn.  The debate is sponsored by the University of Michigan-Dearborn and will be held at 1pm.  If you plan to attend the rally you may want to get there early as working your way through all of the Republican supporters who are being bussed in may take a while.

Wednesday Coffee Talk/Open Thread

by: BZP

Wed Jul 11, 2007 at 07:12:55 AM EDT

Lots of links this morning. Happy Hump Day!
  • The Fix: Endorsement Elite: Michigan Republicans. Chris Cillizza lists the MI GOP endorsement elite: Dick and Betsy DeVos ("the unquestioned first couple of Michigan Republican politics" -- blech!), Pete Hoekstra, Teri Lynn Land, Candice Miller, Chuck Yob. Noticeably absent: Mike Cox.
  • Living Blue: An Invitation Rogers Probably Will Refuse. Mr. Rogers has been noticeably silent for most of the summer so far, and I don't think it's a stretch to say that it has something to do with all the heat he's been getting from groups like Americans Against Escalation in Iraq. They will be paying another visit to the Congressman's office in Lansing on Thursday this week.
  • WILX: Rogers Appropriations Requests. Mike Rogers has submitted a "complete" list of the appropriations project requests he's made for FY2008. This is good to have, but it's not quite what I asked for in this post on the Rogers Watch. I want every earmark he's ever requested while he's been in Congress. But, I'll give credit where credit is due... this is a nice start.
  • Walberg Watch: Congressman Tim to escape from bunker, make local appearance. Rep. Walberg will be visiting another friendly crowd at the Chelsea Commons Clocktower Building, Suite 200, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., this Saturday.
  • Walberg Watch: Nacht (D) Raises $160,000+. Nacht was the first one to release his Q2 numbers, and it's a pretty impressive haul (for a dem in this district). Berryman's totals are in too: $55k over five weeks. Sounds like a good start for both candidates (detailed reports here and here). I'll be curious to see what Walberg and Renier post (they have until July 15 to file).
  • Our Michigan: Ionia County Commissioners Vote to Fund Strong Families/Safe Children. Real family values at work: "Helping children and families makes sense. It is good public policy. It is fiscally responsible and provides longterm benefits to families and communities in which they live. The Ionia County commissioners could see this. Their sense of "we" included the least among them."
  • Conservative Media: South Carolina county GOP chair pulls an Anuzis. I think it's pretty hysterical that these state GOP party chairs keep trying to ban Ron Paul from their presidential debates, when the guy has more cash on hand than St. McCain ($2.4 mil > $2 mil).
  • Stateline: Governors are fair-weather Facebook friends. Gov. Granholm is featured in this Stateline piece about social networking sites like Facebook. It sounds like a lot of the candidates kept their profiles updated during the campaign season last yaer, but have let them stagnate since. Not so with our gov. Kudos to her for staying plugged in with the online community. Other Michigan politicians would be wise to follow her lead.
  • The Conversation: Mmmmm…Michigan! "Big Boy is asking a different question - 'What’s your favorite Michigan thing?' They have launched a statewide interactive campaign that gets people blogging about their favorite Michigan things. Big Boy, of course, is a proud Michigan-based company... So - what is your favorite Michigan thing?"
  • LSJ: MSU board will consider a 9.6 % tuition hike. 9.6% ain't 17%, but another increase could be in the works for the spring semester, if state funding doesn't come through. Sure glad I graduated last year.
  • DNews: Dingell's carbon tax is a shrewd stroke. "Rep. John Dingell is calling the bluff of his fellow lawmakers who love to pander, preen and posture in the name of environmentalism, just as long as it doesn't cost them anything." Not that we've seen the editorial writers at the News "pander, preen and posture in the name of" protecting Michigan residents from a tax increase or anything... but that's a separate matter. This line caught my eye: "'I sincerely doubt that the American people will be willing to pay what this is really going to cost them,' Dingell said of the carbon tax on C-SPAN." Is anyone else reminded of the scene in An Inconvenient Truth where Al Gore puts the picture of the Earth next to the sack of money?

Did I forget anything? Drop your links in the comments section...

Rep. Dingell, Please Get Out of the Way

by: willy mugobeer

Mon Jun 18, 2007 at 17:54:00 PM EDT

Recently at the Monroe County Unity dinner, Debbie Dingell said...

"...Democrats must put the needs of families above the interest of corporations in order for the party to win the 2008 presidential election."

Is anyone else gobsmacked by this irony?  Her husband John is currently carrying massive amounts of water for some of America's biggest corporations (the Big Three) on one of the most important issues facing America these days (fuel economy standards, which are linked to consumers' pocketbooks, global warming, air pollution and national security.)

But you know, Representative Dingell's behavior can be better understood if we consider the following...
