Sarpolus' polling sucks

by: Gus

Tue Jun 19, 2007 at 10:54:33 AM EDT

People are making a lot of hay about a new poll by EPIC-MRA saying that the Gov's approval rating is historically low. They shouldn't. Sarpolus' polling sucks.

Need proof? It comes from a very unlikely source: The Detroit News. Mark Hornbeck and Charlie Cain wrote:

Her previous low mark was a 59 percent negative rating in November -- the same month she nonetheless cruised to re-election.

I can't believe people think this guy's work - or any other of our podunk pollsters from this state for that matter - are any good. The only poll that is truly accurate thoroughly demonstrated that the people support the Governor: the election. It seems everyone has already forgot about the drubbing she gave the Amway guy. Don't let the MSM fool you. People believe in Governor Granholm.

Not to mention the fact that polls don't matter right now. She is not running for anything. She is doing the tough job that we voted her to do.

Its also unbelievable that Rightmichigan.com (you know the MI Republicans' poser version Michigan Liberal run by a former Cox, MIGOP and Amway guy staffer) are trying spin Sarpolus' poll as Dem biased. Are you kidding me? If you believe that one, I have some soap to sell you.

Nefarious Changes To the Rules That Govern Special Education

by: Grace and Peace

Fri Jun 08, 2007 at 13:30:40 PM EDT

Not many media outlets are covering this story but it has profound implications. The manner in which the State Board of Education and their related ISD administrators are treating parents, consumers and advocates, in their attempt to push through negative changes to Michigans Rules the govern Special Education, is deplorable and must be challenged. With your help maybe we can make them listen to the citizens that their decisions affect.

Post-Mackinac Musings: What's it Going to Take?

by: LiberalLucy

Sat Jun 02, 2007 at 21:16:03 PM EDT

(Weigh in! - promoted by LiberalLucy)

Going through all of press from the Mackinac Conference, I realized there seem to be several reverberating themes:
  1. Things are bad, very bad.
  2. The Governor is, well to be perfectly blunt, pissed, really pissed.
  3. The majority of business leaders who attended the Conference seemed to be in favor of the three part plan the Governor and the Democrats are proposing (govt reform, cuts, tax increases).
  4. The Senate Republicans have succumbed to publicly agreeing with the Democrats plan.
  5. More Michiganders than usual have been paying attention to this budget crisis, and us politicos aren't the only ones hopped up about it.
Which has led to several of my own thoughts:
  1. October 1st, the start of the 2008 Fiscal Year, is approaching very very quickly.
  2. It seems as if the Senate Republicans are completely oblivious to the time of year (see above).
  3. Some of the most pro-business Senate Republicans seem to be the most out of touch and the farthest from reality. I wonder how their constituents would react if they heard some of the absurd things that they've said and done recently (i.e. Nancy Cassis from Novi).
  4. Business as usual is anything but. There's scores of important legislation that need to be introduced and voted upon, but this budget is holding up everything.
  5. While resolving the budget is necessary and very important, the length and level that this process has taken is just ridiculous.
So tell me, what do YOU think the people of Michigan should do to help our legislators resolve this process?

Time for Governor Granholm To Use The Bully Pulpit

by: Rhonda

Fri Apr 27, 2007 at 14:11:51 PM EDT

(When Rhonda phrases her argument like that, it's hard to disagree! - promoted by LiberalLucy)

I think it is time for Governor Granholm to use the bully pulpit of her office to speak directly to the people of Michigan.

I heard former State Rep. Maxine Berman say that all the Governor needs is $40 from each of us.  When I talk to my friends and neighbors about it, they ask "Is that all?"

And I'm not talking to just Dems.  That has been the across the board response.  Some even say they would offer to pay more to cover those that couldn't afford it.  Others say they would pay more if it would help their schools.

Senator John Pappageorge calls Governor Granholm a liar

by: bfealk

Tue Apr 10, 2007 at 05:01:56 AM EDT

I opened up my electronic version of the Oakland Press and on the Opinion Page there is a guest opinon by Senator John Pappageorge.  He accuses Governor Granholm of using scare tactics of shutting down the state and that Governor Granholm of manufacturing the crisis.  Pappageorge says, "Senate Republicans will not tive in to her threats.  There are real and simple options,..."

You can read the article for yourself here, http://tinyurl.com/3...

I will have the opportunity to give the governor the opportunity to address Pappageorges lies on Friday.  Let's let Senator Pappageorge hear from us.

Michigan Progress TV upcoming interviews

by: bfealk

Mon Apr 02, 2007 at 19:08:41 PM EDT

Just a heads up on two fantastic interviews I have coming up.
Tomorrow, Tuesday April 3, I'll be interviewing Captain James Yee.  He will be appearing at Oakland University.  Capt. Yee was a chaplain at Guantanamo Bay and was accused of espionage and aiding and abetting the enemy and was held for 76 days in solitary confinement.  He was later released with all charges being dropped.

I have also finalized my interview with Governor Granholm for April 13.

Both shows should air some time in April.  My interview with Mark Brewer should be available on line later this week.

Stay tuned to http://www.michiganp.... for the interviews to hit the Internet and if you live in Waterford, Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, Troy, and the other cities in the Community Television Network, watch for the interviews on Channel 18 on Wideopenwest and Channel 52 on Comcast.

Michigan's Economic Future

by: JWinston70

Sun Feb 18, 2007 at 19:27:59 PM EST

mich_econ_future.jpgI had the opportunity for a little down-time yesterday, a rare occasion for me.  My wife and I went to Schuler Books and Music to hang out, sip on coffee and cocoa, and purchase an ass-load of books.  I came across a book that caught my eye, "Michigan's Economic Future" by Charles Ballard.  Mr. Ballard is a professor in the Dept. Of Economics at Michigan State University and his complete resume makes him even more credible.  Once I opened the book, there was no putting it down. The writing was exemplary; it allowed an economics novice like myself to easily grasp the complexities of our frail economic crisis.

Charles Ballard truly seems to have his finger on the pulse of Michigan's issues.  His book was published in Aug. '06, right before the Michgan Lunatics (I mean Republican Legislators) fool-heartedly repealed the SBT without a responsible replacement tax.  Ballard takes an in depth look at Michigan taxation in chapter 5 -The tax system in Michigan where he examines the SBT and other taxation in Michigan.  Ballard also analyzes and ultimately recommends a 'service tax' as the Governor has done.  His assesments are spot-on.

State of the State: Git 'Er Done!

by: LiberalLucy

Tue Feb 06, 2007 at 22:16:20 PM EST

Once upon a time there were the Republicans, occasionally referred to as the Grand Old Party, Repugs, and the Cult of the Shrub. Governor Granholm just likes to call them The Naysayers.

In telling Saul & Co. where to stick it, Governor Jennifer Granholm managed to deliver a passionate and eloquent summary of what's broken and gave an outline of how we're going to fix it.

With her recent triumph over Mr. Soap and Hope himself, the Governor added a whole new level of steel to her spine and drew a new line in the sand. There will be stem cell research, there will have to be some sort of tax adjustment and that no one will slash school funding.

P.S. The Governor's cut taxes 93 times. The Naysayers? Well all they really did was create a lil ol' 1.9 billion dollar hole.

For the full blow-by-blow, be sure to check out Capital Viewpoint. Feel free to leave your snarks, your spitballs or your swarmy praise below.

For a little extra snarkiness, check out the Dazzling Display of Talent by our very own Michigan Republicans.

State of the State

by: joan

Tue Feb 06, 2007 at 17:44:30 PM EST

Hello everyone! I'm Joan, who you all may not know personally but whose uterine contents are most likely already familiar to you.

I just finished reading the delightful thoughts of Saul Anuzis (who should really leave the sarcasm to those better suited for it) on what he would like to see in the State of the State Address this evening. Being the newly-returned state resident that I am, I also have a few things that I would like to see the governor approach, although I assure you that my priorities are different than those of Mr. Anuzis. You know, since I'm currently a welfare mom, and he is very much not. But then, I'm sure that he has my best interests at heart, guarding them carefully with his faith in the invisible hand of the marketplace freed from the tyranny of unnecessary taxes. Right?

No, wait, he really doesn't. The marketplace hasn't been kind to my unemployed and pregnant behind lately, and I have a feeling that it hasn't been to the behinds of many other people, either. Which would be why Governor Granholm is giving this speech tonight, and not anyone else.

Be sure to check out the real speech at 7:00 on your local PBS or NPR station.
