State Rep. Bert Johnson's Third Annual State of the Community Address

by: RepBertJohnson

Tue Jun 15, 2010 at 10:35:07 AM EDT

(Hello! - promoted by Eric B.)

Please join me for my Third Annual State of the Community Address on Monday, June 21st at 6 p.m. at Second Ebenezer Church in Detroit (14601 Dequindre, near 6 Mile and I-75).

Each year I host this event in order to update voters on the work my colleagues and I have been doing in the State Legislature. I will give a brief update on the most important topics, including the state budget, regional mass transit and other important legislative issues that impact our lives.

I'll be joined by the Governor's Home and Auto Insurance Consumer Advocate, Melvin "Butch" Hollowell, who will give a brief presentation on the status of auto insurance reform, including several recent legislative victories in the House of Representatives.

Of particular interest and relevance will also be a panel discussion concerning the state of education in Detroit and Michigan. Panelists will include Dr. Gloria House, a writer, poet and University of Michigan professor in African-American Studies and the Humanities, State Rep. David Nathan, a Detroit member of the House Education Committee and Chair of the House Subcommittee on School District Academic Emergencies, and several other prominent figures in education. The panel will be moderated by Darrell Dawsey, an author, journalist, commentator on urban life and culture and Time Magazine Detroit blogger.

I hope you'll take some time to attend this important event. I look forward to seeing you June 21st.

Bert Johnson

State Representative, District 5

Chair, Detroit Caucus

Sunday Coffee Talk/Open Thread

by: nirmal

Sun Apr 01, 2007 at 06:00:00 AM EDT

April fools!

  • Walberg Watch:  Despite what Saul would have you believe, Democrats in the U.S. House did not raise taxes by passing the 2008 budget plan.  Instead, they chose not to extend the tax cuts that President Bush passed in his first term.  Given our enormous national budget deficit, we cannot afford to keep spending on programs that we can't pay for.  Unfortunately, Tim Walberg doesn't believe in fiscal responsibilty and voted against the budget plan.

  • Dave Dempsey:  In the context of the Great Lakes Water Compact, Dave Dempsey argues for public ownership of the Great Lakes.  I believe in competition and the marketplace, but there are some things that are simply better off entrusted to the public.  The Great Lakes are part of a system that affects humankind as a whole, and we all have a stake in how our water is treated.

  • Jack Lessenberry:  Mike Bishop may agree that we are in an economic crisis, but he needs to be willing to compromise so that we can start to get out of it.

  • Christine Barry:  Our favorite Shiawassee blogger explores some of the devastating impacts of the Senate Republican cuts on her county.

  • The Conservative Media:  I read criticism of Rep. Johnson on all of the right wing blogs, but not a peep about John Garfield.  Talk about double standards.

What pranks are you pulling today?
