On this day in Michigan history...
February 27, 1836: Russell A. Alger is born in Ohio

Orphaned at the age of nine, Russell A. Alger settled in Grand Rapids in 1860. Over the next forty years, he served the state and the nation as a Civil War general, millionaire lumberman, governor of Michigan and secretary of war during the Spanish American War.

Pitchers and Catchers Report

by: Cordelia Lear

Sun Feb 04, 2007 at 22:04:09 PM EST

"Pitchers and Catchers Report!"

It's one of the most beautiful phrases in the English language. Just knowing that baseball starts in ten days is enough to warm my heart in this bone chilling weather.

Opening day is April 2 at Comerica Park. Bbaatttteerrrruupp!

Your predictions please. This is an open thread.

I'm not actually in front of a TV, but maybe one of you can do running commentary.

Especially on the 20% gas use cut recommendation, vis-a-vis Detroit auto stuff...

I don't know what it's like where you are, but here in Capital City the weather is fantastic! The Hannahdog and I just enjoyed a a very nice walk in the sunshine along the banks of the Grand this second day of...January(!?).

Looks like President Ford will have good weather for his final journey home.

And, uh, so, ah...it's...it was a tragic, tragic situation to be sure and it turned out to be a (nervous chuckle) very bad investment as well. So it was a...a very, very unfortunate set of circumstances and my holdings as a public shareholder with no interests beyond, uh, being just a public shareholder, uh, that uh, when I became aware of it I was very saddened too.

U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Holland) is in the news today - appearing at a rather intriguing seminar focusing on the Middle East and the end times (from the Holland Sentinel), and arguing in that the Iraq War hasn't materially increased the threat of terrorism (from the Grand Rapids Press).

Use this thread to say how you feel about any of this - or whatever else is gnawing at you.

Go ahead, spill your guts. Then go volunteer at your local Dem campaign office. Cold and cloudy. Get used to it.

Arrr. Don't forget, today be Talk Like A Pirate Day.
