When I was volunteering at Jackson State Pen in Michigan, I was often the only white person in the room (other than the guards, natch).
Apparently not all affirmative action programs are passe -- the one that preferentially moves black and brown men to prison efficiently (with preferential treatment at every stage, from harsher patrolling, more searches during stops, harsher charging, to harsher plea deals, to greater likelihood of conviction, to harsher sentencing) remains quite popular with whites.
