It has been an amazing week in Iran, and you are no doubt seeing images that would have been unimaginable just a few weeks ago.
For most of us, Iran has been a country about which we know very little…which, obviously, makes it tough to put the limited news we’re getting into a proper context.
The goal of today’s conversation is to give you a bit more of an “insider look” at today’s news; and to do that we’ll describe some of the risks Iranian bloggers face as they go about their business, we’ll meet a blogging Iranian cleric, we’ll address the issue of what tools the Iranians use for Internet censorship and the companies that could potentially be helping it along, and then we’ll examine Internet traffic patterns into and out of Iran.
Finally, a few words about, of all things, how certain computer games might be useful as tools of revolution.

Tell McCain/Palin...
FUND HUMAN NEEDS, NOT WAR!
Wed, 09/17 5:15pm
Monument Park (corner of Fulton and Division)
Our schools are crumbling, many of us can't afford healthcare, our homes are being foreclosed, food costs are rising... yet the illegal occupation of Iraq continues to receive an almost unlimited amount of government funding.
When McCain and Palin speak at GRCC, let's protest to demand an immediate end to the Iraq War (no time tables, no contractors, and no "residual forces") and the prioritizing of human needs over war.

I admire and applaud all the people who protested Bush at Monticello, but the one image that undermined the whole thing and that I keep seeing the media and critics on the right pointing to is the one guy who was dressed like Uncle Sam reminiscent of Carl Weathers in Rocky.
Why do people keep doing that at protests? Who thought that was a good idea?
In David Sirota's new book, The Uprising, he makes a very good point about the public protest movement and some of the things they do that hurt their message and their causes. He talks about the WTO protests in 1999 and the antiwar protests before and after the Iraq invasion and how fringe elements were used by the media to frame the entire story to the public. He also talks about the use of protest as an instrument of power and how it can be used most effectively. Yes, protest is mostly theater, but the point of that particular theater is to make the audience empathize with the protesters and I am sorry but nobody is going to empathize with a guy dressed in a gaudy Uncle Sam costume. Quite the opposite. It made many in the audience empathize with the people in the audience who yelled back at the guy to shut up and sit down.
The most effective protests in modern times have been the civil rights protests and if you watch films of those you will notice something about them... all the protesters are dressed in normal clothes. Many of them are even dressed up in suits, like Dr. King usually was. You don't see anybody on stilts. You don't see anybody naked and you don't see anybody dressed up as a gaudy clown version of Uncle Sam.
The leaders of the public protest movement would do themselves a favor by distancing themselves from the most fringe elements that only tarnish their credibility and by adopting a much more mainstream look. The Average American is going to have an easier time identifying with protesters yelling "War Criminal" and "Impeach" when they look like the average American than when they look like performers in costumes.

Earlier this week I was contacted by a woman who introduced herself by saying she had never done anything "activist" before, but after hearing about a protest of the DNC in Florida, had decided to organize one here in Michigan. I'm pasting the flyer for the event below: On January 15, 2008, nearly 600,000 Michigan Democrats went to the polls to make their voices heard in the Democratic Presidential primary. The popular vote in Florida and Michigan has been counted, certified by election officials in each state, and officially tallied by the secretary of state in each state. Our votes cannot be ignored. We will not be disenfranchised. The DNC’s refusal to count our votes and seat our delegates according to the ballots cast on January 15 compromises our civil liberties and our voting rights. This decision affects the rights of ALL Michigan residents regardless of political affiliation. Michigan, let your voice be heard. Join together in a grassroots effort to ensure voting privileges and protect the right to vote for future generations. - Demand that our votes be counted and delegates seated based on the Jan. 15 poll results or that a new Michigan primary take place.
- Demand that the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee take the necessary steps to ensure the voices of the people of Michigan are heard and its delegates are seated at the Democratic convention this summer.
Where: Michigan State Capitol Building, Lansing, Mi.When: Thursday, April 17, 2008 Time: 12:00 PM Michigan matters! Preserve Democracy. Our votes cannot be ignored!
