SD10 Incumbent Michael Switalski (D-Roseville)

Sat Aug 27, 2005 at 01:00:00 AM EDT

2010 Status: Term-limited

Campaign Website: Coming Soon

Biography:

Michael Norbert Switalski was born in Hamtramck, Michigan on January 11, 1955. He attended Sacred Heart School before graduating from Roseville High School in 1973, when he was voted Class Wit. He spent the rest of his life trying to draw the vital distinction between wit as opposed to class clown. He graduated from Louisiana State University in 1977 with a BA in Classical Languages and in 1981 earned an MA in History. His career as a professional student ended in 1982 with an M. Litt. in Politics from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.

In the early 80’s, he eked out a living as Sports Editor for the Utica Advisor and C&G Newspapers, and was a frequent contributor to the Detroit Free Press and stringer for Ernest Hemingway’s old paper, the Kansas City Star. His adventures as a newspaper baron reached full fruition when he began publishing The Insider in 1996.

Mr. Switalski served as the Chief of Labor Relations at the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant during a decade of toil for General Dynamics from 1985-93. His political career began with his elevation to the Roseville City Council in 1989. He was elected Macomb County Commissioner in 1992 and Michigan State Representative in 1998. In 2002, Mr. Switalski was elected to the Michigan Senate, where he sits on the Appropriations Committee.

He has coached championship soccer teams, first as skipper of the Roseville Rowdies in the mid—80’s, and then at the helm of the Roseville Yellowsnakes at the turn of the millennium, thanks largely to the skills of players like Sebastian Switalski and Liam Heaney Switalski.

Mickey married Roma Heaney in Glasgow, Scotland in 1985, and the pair was blessed with a son, Liam, in 1993. They all live happily together in Roseville, Michigan.(Democratic Caucus)

Annus Mirabilis: A Real Holiday Tale from Lansing

by: LiberalLucy

Fri Dec 14, 2007 at 16:53:25 PM EST

...as waxed today by Sen. Mickey Switalski of Roseville.  Quite fitting for the season if I may so myself.

Enjoy the video here, or read the pretty prose below -

  Annus Mirabilis, A Fiscal Odyssey

Sing, Goddess, the Wrath of Constituencies displeased,
As Solons took budgets in both hands and squeezed.
Then, weary with cuts, dropped the red budget axe
And seized its hated rival, the increase in tax.

Heroes searched for a cure to the Plague economic
Hit on Revenue, Cuts and Reforms as the tonic--
That many brave Pols to the Fate of Recalls sent
While their bodies by Perks the Pig were rent.

Say then, What Cause first locked the parties in strife?
Some say it was term limits that shortened our life.
Or exuberant tax cuts. Or government waste.
Whatever it was, we Chronic Deficits faced.

Granholm threw down the Gauntlet at her State of the State.
Said she "Sales Tax on Services will be Structurally Great."
The blown away 'Crats cast their votes for fair Jenny
Even Fiscal Conservatives, like two-penny Denny.

But with just sixteen votes, it was never enough.
Lawmakers decided to chew on this stuff.
Insurmountable problems, an abundance of critics.
Tempting solutions that hid pitfalls and gimmicks.

Oh yes, there's lots more where that came from...

Analysis

Alan Fox (interview with Matt Ferguson, September, 2005):

AF: That's a district that has some similarities to Deb Cherry's, at least in the numbers. It went to Kerry with 51%. Switalski won in 2002 with 54%. So that looks like an opportunity for Republicans. It's a Macomb County seat, and in the past 20 years there have been a lot of things that look like strong opportunities to Republicans, and in good Republican years they turned out to be real opportunities. I think that's one that's going to depend on what sort of year it looks like. If it looks like Bush is strong and Republicans feel fairly confident and are picking things up, that may well be the first seat that they look at. If they're on the defensive, even those numbers aren't going to add up much for them.

MF: Tell me about the layout of the District.

AF: The 10th district is dominated by Sterling Heights and Clinton Township - and those are Macomb County communities that have become predominantly - not overwhelmingly - Republican. The growth of the district has really been in those areas -  though I think both communities are places where the growth ended a few years ago because they've essentially been completely developed. That's one reason that the Republicans would see some opportunity there: to the extent that there's been any growth there, it's probably been in Republican areas.

MF: So Roseville and Utica are Democratic strongholds?

AF: Roseville is Democratic but it's not very large. Utica is Republican and is very small. They're really dominated by Sterling Heights and Clinton Township. Sterling Heights and Clinton Township have had Republican state House members  - it's really a district I suspect Republicans thought they had a shot at when the districts were drawn.
