Biography:

POLITICAL

Now serving his first term, Senator Cameron S. Brown, R-Fawn River Twp., was first elected to the Michigan State Senate in November 2002, following two terms in the House of Representatives.  A member of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, Sen. Brown serves as chair of the subcommittees on agriculture, and state police/military and veterans affairs.  He is vice chair of the judiciary/corrections subcommittee, serves on the K-12/school aid/education subcommittee, and serves on the Technology and Energy committee.

Sen. Brown was appointed by the Senate Majority Leader to chair the Michigan Beverage Container and Recycling Task Force, and is vice chair of the Senate Republican Policy Committee.  The committee is responsible for developing the Senate’s public policy agenda.

Before election to the state Legislature, Sen. Brown served ten years as a St. Joseph County commissioner and was elected board chairman three times.  He also served five years on the Sturgis City Commission from 1981 to 1986.

Sen. Brown served as an elected member of the old Southwest Michigan 4th Congressional District Republican Committee.

PROFESSIONAL

Sen. Cameron S. Brown was previously employed as Vice President, Marketing for Freeman Manufacturing Co., an orthopedic soft goods manufacturer, located in Sturgis, Michigan.  He was employed by the Sturgis company for 18 years.

EDUCATIONAL

Sen. Cameron S. Brown received his undergraduate training at the College of William and Mary and the University of Missouri - Kansas City, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history.  He has a master of public administration from Western Michigan University.
PERSONAL

Sen. Cameron S. Brown was born on July 6, 1954.  He is the sixth generation to reside in southwest Michigan, and he lives in the farmhouse built by his great-great-grandparents.

ORGANIZATIONS AND AFFILIATIONS

Sen. Cameron S. Brown has served as the president of the Sturgis Rotary Club and president of Sturgis United Fund.  He served as Treasurer of the St. Joseph County Historical Society.  He is a charter member of U.S. Congressman Fred Upton’s Military Academies Advisory Committee.

Sen. Brown has been a volunteer for the Sturgis Neighborhood Program and has taught Michigan History at Glen Oaks Community College.   He attends Sturgis Wesleyan Church.

Sen. Cameron S. Brown has been awarded the following: Legislator of the Year, Michigan Sheriff’s Association; Glen Oaks Community College Fellow; 2002 Liberty Bell Award winner by the St. Joseph County Bar Association; Friend of Agriculture by Michigan Farm Bureau; named a Guardian of Small Business by the NFIB; special recognition award by the American Legion as a “leader in the Michigan Legislature.”; 1999 Star Award recipient given by the Deputy Sheriff’s Association; 100% Voting Record Award, Small Business Assoc. of Michigan; and recognized as an Agricultural Ally by the Michigan Agribusiness Association.
