US House

Greetings, readers of MichiganLiberal.com.
For those who haven't heard, the U.S. House of Representatives (under the leadership of Speaker Nancy Pelosi) passed a supplemental spending bill for the "War" in Iraq. According to MSNBC: "...lawmakers voted 218-212, mostly along party lines, for a binding war spending bill requiring that combat operations cease before September 2008, or earlier if the Iraqi government does not meet certain requirements." The key word is binding. This is not a non-binding "resolution" telling the President how the Congress feels; this is law that states that in order to get the money for the Iraq military effort the President must abide by their terms and get out of Iraq by no later than 2008. For more info, including video of Pres. Bush and Speaker Pelosi, see http://www.msnbc.msn... .
The U.S. Constitution, Article 1, Section 7 begins: "All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives." Furthermore, Article 1 Section 8 (Powers of Congress) declares that Congress has the power "To raise and support Armies". The founding fathers clearly wanted the Legislature, not the Executive branch, to control the military spending.
The American voters spoke in November to put the opposition party in control of the U.S. Legislature.
The House Democrats spoke today to oppose the President's reckless military policy.
And now I am asking you to please speak to do two things: 1) Inform your U.S. House member how you feel about their vote for today's action (all Michigan Democrats voted for the bill; all Michigan Republicans voted against the bill); and 2) Inform our U.S. Senators how you feel about the House's action.
For information on how to contact your legislator you may go to
http://www.usa.gov/C... .
Thank you all very much for your time.

A couple of weeks ago, Joe Knollenberg put up a $10,000 billboard near Downtown Detroit that had a picture of Arnold Schwartzenegger and read:
Arnold to Michigan Drop Dead Paid for by Joe Knollenberg for Congress
The billboard is oddly cryptic. Most people who saw it didn't understand the connection between Knollenberg, Schwartzenegger, and Michigan.
Well, after some extensive forensic work, the REAL message behind the billboard has been revealed. . .

(This was a great catch -- props to everyone doing fantastic work at the District Watch blogs. - promoted by nirmal)
There are a couple of interesting stories over at Vote NO On Joe (Knollenberg) about how Knollenberg's Chief of Staff is a Washington, D.C. lobbyist.
Not just any lobbyist -- but the lobbyist behind the campaign to keep Seniors from being able to import their medicine from Canada.

As many of you have no doubt noticed, I'm slacking off this week and probably next as well.
However, a message from one of our readers led me to take a short break from my sluffing off this morning to do a little playing with some numbers.
I just went through the vote totals from the Bureau of Elections and added up all of the Dem and Republican votes together (respectively) for U.S. House, State Senate, and State House.
The result paints a pretty disturbing picture with respect to the state of our "democracy" here in Michigan. Let's just say the Republicans ought to thank their lucky stars we don't have a system of proportional representation.
Below are the numbers I came up with - just looking at Ds and Rs (no minor parties). If someone wants to do the legwork of factoring all of them in, I'd be happy to update the figures (here's the complete totals from the Elections Bureau). As it is, it's good enough to give you a general idea of the pattern here.
Most blatant is that even though nearly 300,000 more people voted for Democratic U.S. House candidates, Republicans control our House delgation 9-6. If we were to elect Reps proporitionally, it should be in the neighborhood of an 8-7 Democratic split.
Also notice the State Senate - where Dems garnered over 320,000 more votes in total - yet Republicans continue to control the chamber 21-17. If we voted proportionally, DEMS would be the ones in charge 21-17.
U.S. House-D:
1922808 (54.1% of total D/R vote)
U.S. House-R:
1626399 (45.8% of total D/R vote)
TOTAL D/R VOTE: 3549207
Proportional result: 8-7 Democratic
Reality: 9-6 Republican
State Senate-D:
1967700 (54.4% of total D/R vote)
State Senate-R:
1648470 (45.6% of total D/R vote)
TOTAL D/R VOTE: 3616170
Proportional result: 21-17 Democratic
Reality: 21-17 Republican
State House-D:
2038714 (55.7% of total D/R vote)
State House-R:
1620803 (44.2% of total D/R vote)
TOTAL D/R VOTE: 3659517
Proprtional result: 61-49 Dem
Reality: 58-52 Dem
Sure is one hell of a way to run a railroad. We should probably be thankful we did as well as we did. Clearly, this deck is clearly missing more than a few cards.
Redistricting reform NOW!

(Deadline is 5pm tomorrow, Labor Day. - promoted by lpackard)
Time to pick Michiganliberal.com's "Michigan First!"-endorsed U.S. House candidate.
As before, only Democratic challengers running against a Republican (or
for an open seat) AND with the ability to accept contributions online on their website

really what you win is bragging rights - and some free exposure for
your campaign.

prop up site traffic over the holiday!) You must be logged in as a
Michlib user to participate. Vote in the box at left. If you don't have
a Michlib account, click here to make one.
Again, voting ends at 5PM Monday!

My sources for Congressional candidates are the FEC campaign finance database, ActBlue and the DCCC (which does have some known errors). Stay tuned for the State Senate and House editions.
Note: Challengers are italicized, incumbents are not. Assumed that all incumbents are running unless otherwise known or termed out. Am not including candidates who have announced but not filed anything. If I missed somebody, please reply in the comments, and include their FEC candidate ID. Also, Scott Elliott and Steve Reifman are not listed because I've heard they've dropped out. Scott's website is now blank, and Steve is the treasurer of Nancy Skinner's campaign.
