Michigan Hotel Rooms Taken Away; What's Next?

by: TomChoske

Mon Mar 10, 2008 at 10:11:17 AM EDT

I was looking around the net today, and came across an interesting tidbit. Mark Brewer's rationale for the past month of why we would be seated at the DNC was that they were holding hotel rooms for us. Turns out, the DNC just canceled those reservations the other day.

I can only imagine that these hotel rooms go pretty fast. Even if we get delegates seated, where will they stay? Will there be rooms left in Denver, or will Michigan be done a further disservice and forced to stay outside of the city?

Despite RNC Threat, Five States Stick with Primaries

by: northernlib

Mon Oct 22, 2007 at 15:23:29 PM EDT

(Here's a CQ article with more - promoted by lpackard)

The DNC isn't the only national party threating to yank delegates for states that go against its rules.  At its 2004 convention, the RNC voted that all primaries must take place after February 5.  The RNC has voted to yank half the delegates in states that hold primaries before that date.  New Hampshire, Florida, South Carolina, Wyoming and Michigan are defying the RNC and betting the Republican nominee will seat all their delegates at the convetion.  To date, none of those five states have backed down and none of the Republican candidates have asked not to participate in their primaries despite the threat by the RNC.  As a result, the Republicans, like the Democrats, are faced with a few early rebel states and a very heavily loaded February 5 primary.  Clearly, a bi-partisan national solution is needed to this problem well before the 2012 election season.

Who is going to YearlyKos?

by: memiller

Thu May 24, 2007 at 21:59:53 PM EDT

I know that lots (most?) of the folks around here hang out at DailyKos as well, so you know about YearlyKos. It's just around the corner (of the lake) in Chicago. I'm taking Amtrak from Kalamazoo, because parking in downtown Chicago is a pain, and I'm going with some other kossacks here.

Aug 2 - 5. Only $225 - but price goes up to $275 on June 1. And - Obama, Edwards, and Richardson are confirmed. Where else are you going to get a chance to maybe ask a question of these guys?

So - who's going?

Washtenaw Cty. Dem. convention today

by: David Boyle

Sat Feb 10, 2007 at 22:22:16 PM EST

(Cross-posted not from National Review Online or Little Green Footballs, but...*Arblogger*)

Besides some announcements and delegate elections (Mich. Dem. Party convention coming up in 2 weeks, etc.), the main focus was on passing resolutions, or not passing them.

About 10 or so were up, and just about all were passed, including ones for: an investigation of the Bush administration's intelligence failure and Iraq war; for federal action to end the violence in Darfur; TWO resolutions "Condemning Abuses by the Bush Administration" (one guy gallantly withdrew his version in favor of the other one); allowing felons who served their sentence to serve on juries; that the essence of American patriotism is to honor the Constitution; for universal health care; for election reform (hand count audits etc.); redeploying troops from Iraq; and...
I had two, both very short, and submitted just yesterday,

"1. Resolved, that the State of Michigan should adopt legislation like Illinois, New Jersey, California, and other states ensuring that the state has no direct or indirect investments in Sudan until the genocide in Darfur has ended.

2. Resolved, that the State of Michigan, through the Governor, should make an official apology to the victims of slavery or of legal (per se) or other (de facto) racial segregation by state law, private covenants, or other means of segregation."

Due to the latish appearance of mine, they had to be voted on even to be considered...and the latter one failed by 2 votes even to be considered. The Darfur one did pass, fortunately; who knows, up the chain it might be merged with the other Darfur resolution, or not. (No point in petitioning the federal government to do something about Sudan if our own state hands aren't even clean.)

...All the above stuff to the best of my memory, sorry for any errors.

Thanks to the folks who put this on. (Including Marcy Wheeler, whose book "Anatomy of Deceit" was on sale there, and who also introduced the resolution--the one that passed--re "Condemning Bush Abuses" above...how she does get around!)
