HD105: The clown car gets more full by one

by: Eric B.

Fri Apr 04, 2008 at 15:30:00 PM EDT

It's been rumored for a bit that John Ramsey, father of JonBenet Ramsey, would try a repeat run at the 105th House District seat.  Rumor confirmed today in the Muskegon Chronicle.

LANSING — John Ramsey plans another run for the Michigan House.

Ramsey, father of slain child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, said Thursday he expects to seek a seat representing part of Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula. The Charlevoix resident lost a similar bid in the 2004 Republican primary, finishing second in a six-candidate race to eventual seat winner Rep. Kevin Elsenheimer.

But wait, there's more to this story, according to the Petoskey News Review:

John Ramsey’s candidacy for the 105th district could be over before it even begins.

According to state and county records, Ramsey is not a Michigan resident — a requirement of anyone running for public office. His voting record, available at the Charlevoix County Clerk’s office, shows that Ramsey’s local driver’s license was canceled last year, subsequently voiding his residency and voter registration in Michigan.

“I didn’t realize a driver’s license dictated where you resided,” said Ramsey when told about the oversight within his own paperwork.

No, but most of us might think it a question worth asking while, you know, filing paperwork to run for the state Legislature.  And, although the state's records confirm that Ramsey isn't officially a resident of Michigan, he can get it corrected in time to still meet the May filing deadline.  Still, starting a campaign as a carpetbagger...

HD105: And then there were three

by: Eric B.

Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 23:51:54 PM EDT

You know, the first impression I got from this photo of Dennis Lennox was that the glasses were Photoshopped onto his face.  The second impression I got was that maybe the frames were genuine but that maybe there were no lenses.  The third impression was that maybe he should shut his mouth, so as not to look so stupid.

But, that deer caught in the headlights is indeed our friend Dennis Lennox, formerly of Central Michigan University and now focused on winning the Republican nomination to represent Michigan's 105th District in the State Legislature, taking over for Kevin Elsenheimer, who'se chosen not to seek a third term so he can run for a seat on the appeals court.

The deer in the headlights routine might not be so accidental.  There are now three Republicans running for the 105th seat, a Charlevoix-area business owner named Tim Boyko and, today, the chairman of the Otsego County board of commissioners, Ken Glasser.  There is also one Democrat running.

Ken Glasser would like you to meet 1984:

“We need to stabilize the business environment by reducing excessive regulations and tax burdens so that small businesses can expand and provide jobs,” Glasser said. “Government needs to be trimmed back in these difficult times. It’s time to understand that government doesn’t have all the answers. Government should be more responsive to its citizen owners.”

Loud groans.  Haven't we been trying this for, like, the last decade and a half to no benefit?  Yes we have.
