  Family Biography

My wife, Cherie, and I have been married twelve years and reside in Petoskey. A Petoskey native, Cherie is foremost a mom to our two children, Jonathan and Hannah, and works with the Northern Michigan Hospital Foundation as a Planned Giving Officer. She values her volunteer work at the Community Free Clinic and helping many non-profits obtain grant funding for their worthwhile projects. In her spare time, Cherie enjoys reading and the family horse, Sadie.

Jonathan, age 12, is in the 6th grade and spends most of his time outside with his neighbor friends, the "Greenwood Gang."  He enjoys building, skiing, shooting, playing football, the saxophone, video games, and caring for animals of all kinds!

Hannah, age 10, is in 4th grade and is usually found playing with the "Greenwood Gang" friends or her Christmas puppy, Rascal; working on her 4H scrapbook; or dreaming about showing Sadie in the county fair.

Together, our family enjoys all that Michigan has to offer whether it be snow shoeing, swimming, camping, horseback riding or traveling together.

Analysis

Alan Fox (interview with Matt Ferguson, June, 2005):

MF: McDowell is over on the eastern edge of the U.P. and is one of the new people elected in 2004. What's his outlook for '06?

AF: That district looks like a fairly typical U.P. district - the eastern U.P. has always been more Republican than the rest of the U.P. and that's been the seat that Republicans have held from time to time - sometimes for quite a while. McDowell won an open seat with 53% of the vote even though he ran 11-points ahead of John Kerry, who got 42%. Kerry's strength probably understates Democratic core strength in that district - but not by 8, 9 or 10 points - so that probably is a Republican district. McDowell had the advantage of running against a Republican incumbent who was coming in perceived as very strong and a likely winner and turned out to fizzle when he got into the election. That was Walter North, the former Senator. McDowell's got some strength of his own and he may well be able to survive, but that's got to be far at the top of the Republicans wish list and they've got a core of people they can draw from to go after that seat and I think it's going to be one they try to get.
