Net Neutrality Update-FCC decides not to decide: AT&T wins again

by: jtcaldwell

Thu Jun 28, 2007 at 16:14:33 PM EDT

Well after holding virtually unannounced hearings across the country for as short a time period as was legally allowed, the FCC, that self-proclaimed protector of the public, that guardian of the average Joe and Jane who use the Internet, announced its decision. The best way to summarize it is to quote the Jamaican philosophy, "Don't worry. Be happy!"

Good Ol' Internet Neutrality Again

by: jtcaldwell

Mon May 21, 2007 at 12:41:19 PM EDT

Common Cause just sent out this alert: In an interview with Forbes, incoming AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said he wants to see a two-tiered system on the Internet: big business websites in the fast lane, everyone else in a slow lane. The FCC is holding hearings until June 15th-let them know: hands off our Internet.

Monday Coffee Talk/Open Thread

by: BZP

Mon Apr 30, 2007 at 06:06:57 AM EDT

Happy Monday. Here are your morning links... part of a balanced breakfast.
  • LSJ: Thunderous applause greets Marines on return to Lansing. Imagine the applause they'll hear when all the troops come home.
  • Booth: State still limping on dealing with uninsured. "Cover the Uninsured Week" is coming to an end, but we're still waiting on the Bush administration to approve Gov. Granholm's plan to cover more than half a million Michigan residents.
  • Conservative Media: The race for Livingston County’s two term limited House seats begins. The Comm Guru has the scoop on the early jockeying for Livingston County's two state House seats.
  • ICDP Dispatch: Net Neutrality Update-AT&T wins again. JT Caldwell is keeping tabs on AT&T and their relentless effort to kill net neutrality. Unfortunately, things aren't looking good at the moment.
  • T.C. Record-Eagle: No plans to revisit '87 hoopla. The National Governors Association will be holding their annual meeting in Traverse City from July 20-23 this year. Michigan hasn't hosted the NGA since 1987, so hopefully this will give us a chance to show off our beautiful state, and give the local economy a nice shot in the arm.
  • Walberg Watch: Life in Congress. Fitzy takes a quick look at two fluff pieces about Rep. Tim Walberg from yesterday's Battle Creek Enquirer.
  • Our Midland: More people at Dems' annual fundraiser. I love local party-building news like this. Hopefully the Midland County Dems can keep it up.
  • DNews: NAACP: Clinton offers some hope. Notes on Clinton's speech to the NAACP from last night.

Net Neutrality Update-AT&T wins again

by: jtcaldwell

Sat Mar 03, 2007 at 11:51:05 AM EST

Remember the days of yore when activists in Michigan fought AT&T's efforts to basically take over our communications systems? Remember the term "net neutrality?" Remember when Granholm was being seduced by the promise of jobs for Michigan if only she would approve the Republican-led legislature's desire to become one with AT&T? Ah, those were the days.

On Deck Tomorrow: Net Neutrality

by: Cordelia Lear

Fri Feb 23, 2007 at 21:20:39 PM EST

Update below the fold!

Yes, that's right. The state Democratic party Resolutions Committee has approved a net neutrality resolution which will be voted on tomorrow afternoon at the state convention.

My rumor mill is telling me that AT&T and the CWA are planning on mounting a serious challenge, and possibly a floor fight. And, you thought the 3 pm session would be boring.

We need all party members and precinct delegates to attend the convention and vote in favor of this resolution on net neutrality.

The full text of the resolution introduced by the Ingham County Democratic Party (and an identical resolution was passed in Eaton County) is below...

State of State: what should Granholm say?

by: David Boyle

Mon Feb 05, 2007 at 21:53:06 PM EST

Whatever she wants, of course. (Trick question in title)

I don't think the weblogger community will complain, though, if La Gov says something about net neutrality, or about the Michigan Democratic Party staying up with the times (e.g., having full-time webmaster), rather than staying mired in the past like, let's be frank, plenty of low-gas-mileage (koff koff) Michigan institutions which need to be rewired, and fast.

(I personally wouldn't complain if JG said something about what Michigan can do re the Sudan/Darfur crisis--if you think WE'RE suffering in Mich, try the mass rapes and executions in that part of the world--, but that's all I'll say. Besides mentioning that even the Gropinator signed legislation about Sudan, so all the more should the Nation's Greatest Gov do something similar...)

Looking forward to an exciting S of S speech! Knock one outta the park J. Grho!

  And happy birthday too!!! !! !  :D

(Completely off-topic: the Repubs torpedoed the Warner/Levin resolution today, the one condemning the Iraq surge. So much for decency and common sense. But at least Mr. Carl tried, God bless him...)
