Rashida pulls out win over corporate recall campaign

by: yvette248

Thu Sep 10, 2009 at 15:19:34 PM EDT

Grassroots win over big money campaign.

There's not too many times you here these words strung together in a sentence, but the grassroots campaign really came out in support of Rep. Rashida Tlaib who was targeted for recall for getting in the way of a multi-million bridge over the Detroit River.

The Wayne County Election Commission rejected recall petition language filed against State Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Detroit, for her position on a second span across the Detroit River and her vote to turn Cobo Hall over to a regional authority.

The petitions were started by Detroit political consultant Adolph Mongo, who works for Ambassador Bridge owner Matty Maroun, who is trying to build a twin span to the Ambassador over the river.

I had nothing to do with the campaign but I know Rashida personally and am convinced of her ethical stance and her sincerity in representing the constituents in her district. I applaud the people who worked so hard to keep corporate interests from stifling one of Michigan's newest, rising political stars.

"Right to Work" (for less) Petition Drive Floundering

by: ypsi-blue

Fri Feb 29, 2008 at 14:22:02 PM EST

(Good news! - promoted by Eric B.)

An article in the Oakland Press reveals that even the anti-working families wonks at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy who are behind a "right to work" petition to put an anti-union referendum on November's ballot think they will fail.

One huge sign of the petition's likely failure was the dismal efforts of anti-worker signature gatherers to even make a showing at Michigan's January 20th primary.

Signature gatherers planned to appear at polling places all over the state and confuse voters with their "right to work" language, hiding the fact that the petition would make it harder for workers to join or organize labor unions in their workplaces.

But they just didn't show up. Instead, several thousand labor union members came out to the polls that day, distributed leaflets and educated voters about what "right to work" means.

Backers of the petition, all pro-big business types, insist that killing unions is the best way to revive the economy. In other words, the best way to make an economy work is to make sure that workers and their families are paid low wages, lack good health benefits, and aren't protected by safety and health regulations.

Does that make any sense? While it might ensure high profits for corporations and fat salaries and bonuses for executives (the folks who fund the Mackinac Center), it is no plan to build an economy. Indeed, look at the 1950s through the 1970s when Michigan's economy was at its most robust. That was when unions had the most strength and influence.

Ever since the 1990s, Republicans in the Michigan government presided over slashing public services and the tax revenue, especially for higher income folks. And they presided over Michigan's drive to an economic slump. And now, in their last remaining footholds in the state legislature, they have blocked any and every plan Governor Granholm has offered to turn things around.

Look at the states with "right to work" laws. They are the poorest in the country. Workers their have low wages, no benefits, and public services are tiny. Is that what we want to become?

Sign the Bishop Ban protest petition

by: Eric B.

Tue Aug 07, 2007 at 12:00:16 PM EDT

Put your John Hancock down in comments.  We will continue to bump this to the top as long as access to any political blog is blocked in the state Senate.

We, the undersigned, wish to declare our support for free speech and in opposition to undue restrictions placed upon it.  It is with this in mind that we wish to declare our protest to the recent blocked access to Blogging for Michigan in the Michigan state Senate.  We believe that this action has suborned the public good by stifling communication between elected officials and constituents, and has blocked off an important legislative body from exposure to criticism of its actions.  We further believe this to be antithetical to the concept of free expression laid down in the U.S. Bill of Rights, and to be in direct conflict with the very basic notions of representative government.  We sincerely and strongly urge the office of state Sen. Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, to reconsider its actions.

Action Requested!: Racial Tensions in Jena, LA - Nooses Hung Under a "White's Only" Tree at HS

by: demfan313

From the DemocraticUnderground.Com...
Story at the Democratic Underground.

Please Sign and Support the Civil Rights Petition that will be sent to the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

In September 2006, a group of African American high school students in Jena, Louisiana asked the school for permission to sit beneath a "whites only" shade tree. There was an unwritten rule that blacks couldn't sit beneath the tree. The school said they didn't care where students sat. The next day, students arrived at school to see three nooses (in school colors) hanging from the tree.

The boys who hung the nooses were suspended from school for a few days. The school administration chalked it up as a harmless prank, but Jena's black population didn't take it so lightly. Fights and unrest started breaking out at school. The District Attorney, Reed Walters, was called in to directly address black students at the school and told them all he could "end their life with a stroke of the pen."

Saul's getting a smack down

by: Gus

Fri May 18, 2007 at 15:19:43 PM EDT

(Too good not to share... - promoted by Nazgul35)

Things are not looking good for the Michigan Republican Party Chair.

From the Michigan Conservative Dossier:

I got this email from the MI Republican Liberty Caucus today:

Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis will be issuing a statement retracting his call for Ron Paul to be excluded from future debates. His office now says
that there will be no "petition" circulated and a staffer says he hopes there will be a public statement about the matter later today. All of the website contact forms at http://www.migop.org... were deleted when the volume of negative comments exceeded the site's capacity. The state office (517) 487-5413 is still accepting calls.

There's more:

92% Do not support Anuzis' efforts to bar Ron Paul from future debates
POLL QUESTION: Do you support Michigan Republican Chair Saul Anuzis' efforts to bar Congressman Ron Paul from future debates?

Yes--His Comments crossed the line
11 votes/8%

He has the right to say what he wants
128 votes/92%

Total Votes: 139

From FreeMarketNews.com :

Has Saul Anuzis had enough? The Michigan GOP big had wanted to ban presidential candidate Ron Paul from further debates. But an Internet wildfire may have derailed his efforts.

FNMN feedbacker Tim writes: "I contacted the Michigan GOP early this morning & was told Saul Anuzis was backing down & would be officially withdrawing his petition. Can anyone confirm this? Grassroots apparently turned into a grassfire on the neocons & instead of protecting their home they ran to hide. If they keep losing battles in their War Against Ron Paul, we might gain the White House for him yet!"

From Mike's Blog :

I just spoke with a friend who knows the people who work in the Michigan GOP office. He said the office "can't handle the volume" and "don't know what to do". Saul Anuzis's blackberry is flooded with messages, his voicemail is already full, and Ron Paul supporters are starting to find new phone numbers to reach him. They are totally freaked out.

Those are just the tip of the iceberg. There are over 300 blogposts about Saul and Ron Paul. Not to mention the hundreds of news stories.

I am guessing we won't be seeing comment #64 anytime soon.

How to stop a war.

by: updemocrat

Thu Mar 01, 2007 at 03:20:53 AM EST

Greetings all, My name is Ron Esquerra, I live in Alger county and have been a reader here for a few years on and off. I finaly decided to join and begin posting. My first post is probably the most urgent and important one I shall share with you all. As many of you may be aware, this Administration is setting the stage for a war with Iran. Let me say that the ramifications of such action would be utterly terrible in every way. So you ask, "What can we do about it?" Well, General Wes Clark has partnered with a group of Iraq and Afghanistan vets called votevets.org and formed a website called stopiranwar.com Below is the message General Clark wrote about the effort. Please go to the website and sign the petition. This isn't any kind of campaign related activity. In fact, General Clark believes this to be so important that he has put any plans of his concerning 2008 on hold so he can put his full effort in to this. We have over 23,000 signatures so far and General Clark feels we can achieve 100,000 or more.

I am a veteran, and a Democrat. My friends that I served with are still in Iraq as we speak. Please help me do all I can to make sure that their next stop will NOT be Tehran. Thanks.

Website is here.
