New Poll: Little Support for Dillon Plan

by: LiberalLucy

Thu Dec 17, 2009 at 09:29:42 AM EST

You probably remember the bomb that Speaker Andy Dillon dropped earlier this year with talk of consolidating the benefits for over 400,000 public employees including emergency personnel, public school employees, and current and retired state employees, in the form of House Bill 5345.

The East Lansing-based polling firm EPIC-MRA ran a poll regardless, and released the staggering results earlier this week. Only 22% of those surveyed would support such a measure if enacted.

This is in addition to an additional poll that MRG came out with in September showing virtually the same thing - opposition was strong at 57 percent to 37 percent, and within that, 72 percent of GOP voters opposed the bill. (Which is further interesting, particularly if rampant rumors of a possible Dillon gubernatorial run as an independent.)

According to Roger Martin, speaking for the group Citizens for Accountability in Reform, hearings in the state House on HB 5345 have stalled and key witnesses have been not been allowed to testify.

“House Bill 5345 is viewed as bad and risky public policy by Michigan voters, and legislators who support it will find it to be toxic in 2010 and beyond,” said Roger Martin, spokesman for Citizens for Accountability in Reform, a growing coalition representing taxpayers, police, firefighters, teachers, insurance companies and others who are concerned House Bill 5345 doesn’t provide the reform it promises at a price taxpayers can afford.

Martin noted that a House committee holding hearings on the bill has announced that today’s scheduled hearing will be the last for possibly months, even though 10 more bills were introduced late last week to implement the $4 billion to $5 billion state government health plan.

“With an election year just around the corner, given Michigan voters’ overwhelming opposition to this legislation, it’s no wonder the committee doesn’t want to hold more hearings,” Martin said. “During the hearings over the past two months, so many witnesses have either voiced opposition or raised serious concerns, opposition to the legislation among voters has skyrocketed.”

Obama 50%, McCain 41% in new Marist poll

by: Gaspare

Mon Sep 22, 2008 at 13:04:02 PM EDT

(More from the horserace - promoted by Eric B.)

In a poll taken entirely after the conservative economic ideology blew up all over the world, Obama is up by 9 against the champion of government deregulation, John McCain.
http://www.maristpoll.marist.e...

As Hank Paulson and the Bush administration try to ram this taxpayer fleecing scam during this period of man-made economic crisis, McCain is running around screaming for regulation. Except is't the kind of regulation that shifts more public wealth to the private sector. The GOP should simply replace taxes with interest payments paid directly to the banks.

Obama leads McCain 48 to 39 in new PPP poll

by: Gaspare

Tue Jun 24, 2008 at 12:59:39 PM EDT

Looks like Obama's bad week has really taken a toll on Obama's numbers. or not.

The PPP has this to say; "Every new poll PPP does in a swing state provides more evidence that long term Democratic disunity...was overblown"

Obama leads McCain 48% to 39% undecided at 13%

I attribute this to members of Michigan Liberal fanning out throughout the state and doing an excellant job of promoting Obama's message.

or McCain's crappy ads, one or the other.

Obama leads McCain in MI, latest Rasmussen poll

by: Gaspare

Wed Jun 11, 2008 at 10:22:04 AM EDT

(Good news! - promoted by Eric B.)

Dave G posted this over at DailyKos so I brought the news over here.

In a 4 point turnaround, Obama now leads McCain in Rasmussen's latest Michigan poll, 45% to 42%.  The poll was taken six days after Obama clinched the Democratic nomination.

This is certainly good news but all of us should continue working as though Obama is 10 points down.  We must continue to whip for votes in every corner of Michigan.  I constantly talk with people where I live in the Republican stronghold area of Oxford.  I will cede nothing, I will take nothing for granted, I will fight for every voter that gets turned away by the voter ID law and I urge every Michigan liberal, Obama volunteer and citizen to do the same from now until the vote is certified by the electoral college in December.

Michigan voters support Obama

by: BrianDStraw

Mon Apr 14, 2008 at 12:39:31 PM EDT

(Cross-posted at West Michigan Rising

While I don't typically post poll-driven diaries I thought that this one might be of interest. In an EPIC-MRA poll released today Michigan voters clearly are not angered by the fact that Obama took his name off of the primary ballot.

When asked who they would prefer to win the Democratic nomination, voters picked Obama 42% of the time and Clinton 37% of the time.

When given a general election matchup Obama and McCain are statistically tied with Obama receiving 43% of the vote to McCain's 41%. On the other hand McCain led Clinton 46% to 37%. The margin of error for the general election match-ups was 4%.

McCain was viewed favorably by 59% of voters. Obama was viewed favorably by 55% of voters. Clinton was viewed favorably by 45% of voters.

Again, while all of these numbers are interesting, the numbers can change significantly. We should not rely on general election numbers now to be any sort of predictor of actual votes. The important take-away is that individuals who say that Democrats have lost Michigan and Florida already are wrong.

Brits Rank U.S. Liberals

by: northernlib

Tue Oct 30, 2007 at 14:05:24 PM EDT

(This isn't strictly about Michigan, but it is kind of fun. My question is ... Where does Hazen Pingree rank? - promoted by Eric B.)

Perhaps in return for the unwaning attention of American tabloids into the lives of the British royals, our friends across the pond are offering their take on American liberals (and conservatives, but who cares).  This week, the Telegraph is ranking the Top 100 most influential liberals in America, beginning with 81-100 yesterday, 61-80 today, and continuing the countdown the remainder of this week.  http://www.telegraph...

Of note so far are DLC Chair Harold Ford #95, Debbie Dingell #86 and Howard Dean #84.  Colbert #61 beat Jon Stewart #81.

No Presidential candidates have ranked yet, although two campaign aides have been mentioned:  Clinton Campaign Chair, Patti Solis Doyle #91 and Clinton Communications Chief, Howard Wolfson #66.

Where will Carl Levin rank?  How will the candidates line up?  Will Hillary Clinton compete with Gore for Most Influential Liberal?

New EPIC/MRA Poll on the way

by: Brainwrap

Tue Apr 17, 2007 at 15:18:58 PM EDT

I just got off the phone with EPIC/MRA--they're conducting a new poll of Michigan business owners, covering the overall business climate here in Michigan, prospects for the near future, and so forth.

Unlike most of the polls I've taken (I've responded to EPIC/MRA polls at least 4 times in the past 3 years! They seem to like calling me...), this one didn't seem to be focused on any specific political  candidate/party or ballot proposal. Yes, I know that SOMEONE had to have sponsored the poll, but from the questions it could have been from any point on the political spectrum.

The Importance of Citizen Journalists

by: Cordelia Lear

Tue Feb 20, 2007 at 19:41:02 PM EST

On the rise of the blogging revolution from Zogby.
A majority of Americans (55%) in an online survey said bloggers are important to the future of American journalism and 74% said citizen journalism will play a vital role, a new WE Media/Zogby Interactive poll shows.

The poll was released as part of a conference for media industry insiders at the University of Miami.

Another blurb:

In the national survey of adults, 72% said they were dissatisfied with the quality of American journalism today. A majority of conference-goers who were polled on the subject agreed  55% said they were dissatisfied, and 61% said they believed traditional journalism is out of touch with what Americans want from their news.

Nearly nine out of 10 media insiders (86%) said they believe bloggers will play an important part in journalism's future.

I'm glad this was an acknowledgment of "citizen journalists." This certainly takes the steam out of the groups claiming that only "professional bloggers" should be credible. This was an issue in the run-up to the Libby trial. Both groups were ultimately represented.  The citizen journalists at FireDogLake.com did a far better job in explaining and disseminating information.

As the article points out, trustworthiness is the key. Quote good sources and take arguments to logical conclusions. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but they're not entitled to their own set of facts.

Keep calling bull shit, bull shit. Keep pointing out how sweet the air smells around the roses.
