UPDATE: "We are One" Rallies across Michigan CONTINUE thru the Year (MLK Legacy Remembered)

by: Hector Solon

Mon Apr 04, 2011 at 11:17:52 AM EDT

( - promoted by Eric B.)

The "We are One" Rallies continued on April 4, 2011 across Michigan and the Country, and more are planned.

DESCRIPTION:"Union members and our allies are taking part in more than 1,000 events  around the nation on and around April 4 [more planned] in solidarity with working  people in Wisconsin and dozens of other states where corporate  politicians are trying to take away our rights. On April 4, we honor  the memory of Martin Luther King Jr., who gave his life for the freedom  to vote, to afford a college education and for the right to join a union  and achieve justice for all workers."

This from Governor Rick Snyder's January 17, 2011 PROCLAMATION:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 17, 2011 as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in Michigan, and call upon the people of Michigan to pay tribute to the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through participation in community service projects on the King Holiday and throughout the year.

That's exactly what is happening, with or with Gov Snyder, as MORE EVENTS to Follow the April 4 Rallies across the State and will continue into May and beyond. Planned so far:

Fight Back Teach-In's being held in Michigan and across the Country on April 5, 2011. In Michigan activities will be held at Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Wayne State University and Western Michigan University

Ann Arbor (April 30, 2011) Peaceful Protest of Snyder's UofM Commencement
Kalamazoo (April 13, 2011) Community Forum on Public Education
Sterling Heights (May 5, 2011) Peaceful Protest of Snyder's Career Focus Luncheon

Follow this LINK for future EVENTS and other sites, as they are added.

Multiple organizations will continue to celebrate MLK's legacy and stand for worker and human rights, and the list of allies is getting longer as new events are in planning for throughout this year.

On Petals And Metal, Or, Today And Tomorrow, Street Actions Are Afoot

by: fake consultant

Tue Mar 15, 2011 at 08:49:07 AM EDT

For the past couple months I have been talking a lot about "taking it back", and I have two great chances for you to do just that over the next two days.

One of them involves actions that are taking place all over the USA-but the other is a very special and particular event which will be taking place in Vancouver, British Columbia on Wednesday.

This'll be a short story...but by the time we're done, you'll have stuff to do this week.

My take: Obama comes to Grand Rapids (a la Twitter)

by: XavierLA

Thu May 15, 2008 at 20:19:57 PM EDT

I wasn't exactly sure how I was going to cover last night's rally, but once I arrived I figured I should do what I do best--Twitter.

It was a mixture of live-reporting, attempts at wit/humor, and analysis.

I'm just going to copy & past the full stream-of-consciousness tweet-fest, please excuse the spelling error.s

Apparently, the line for the Obama event is already forming in downtown... 02:35 PM May 14, 2008 from twhirl

Retweeting @Spout: For a limited time only: 50% off all DVDs on Spout! Get 'em while they're hot. http://www.spout.com/store/ 02:48 PM May 14, 2008 from twhirl

Have to leave here at 4:30pm to get credentials for an event that doesn't start until 7:00pm. Stuuupid. 03:19 PM May 14, 2008 from twhirl

@tonytagliavia i'll be there in about an hour! 03:41 PM May 14, 2008 from twhirl in reply to tonytagliavia

Heading over to VanAndel to check in and get my wristband... 04:25 PM May 14, 2008 from twhirl

At this point, I was heading down Ottawa from my workplace to the Van Andel Arena... read the rest of my journey below the fold

But first...

And the tweet that defines the night for me.  Although its a simple take-away, it was all over the news last night.. and I tweeted it first (well, probably not really):

Endorsement shifts focus away from obama's trouncing in WV. Now he has to live up to increased expectations among workingclass whites in KY.   about 22 hours ago  from txt

But on to the fun! Again, I apologize about the spelling. I removed the irrelevant tweets (mostly me asking my friend for a ride home).

Michigan, Let Your Voice Be Heard Rally, Thurs. 4/17 in Lansing

by: XavierLA

Wed Apr 16, 2008 at 14:20:03 PM EDT

Earlier this week I was contacted by a woman who introduced herself by saying she had never done anything "activist" before, but after hearing about a protest of the DNC in Florida, had decided to organize one here in Michigan.  I'm pasting the flyer for the event below:

On January 15, 2008, nearly 600,000 Michigan Democrats went to the polls to make their voices heard in the Democratic Presidential primary. The popular vote in Florida and Michigan has been counted, certified by election officials in each state, and officially tallied by the secretary of state in each state.

Our votes cannot be ignored. We will not be disenfranchised. The DNC’s refusal to count our votes and seat our delegates according to the ballots cast on January 15 compromises our civil liberties and our voting rights. This decision affects the rights of ALL Michigan residents regardless of political affiliation.

Michigan, let your voice be heard.

Join together in a grassroots effort to ensure voting privileges and protect the right to vote for future generations.

  • Demand that our votes be counted and delegates seated based on the Jan. 15 poll results or that a new Michigan primary take place.
  • Demand that the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee take the necessary steps to ensure the voices of the people of Michigan are heard and its delegates are seated at the Democratic convention this summer.

Where: Michigan State Capitol Building, Lansing, Mi.

When: Thursday, April 17, 2008

Time: 12:00 PM

Michigan matters!

Preserve Democracy.

Our votes cannot be ignored!
