Time for Governor Granholm To Use The Bully Pulpit

by: Rhonda

Fri Apr 27, 2007 at 14:11:51 PM EDT

(When Rhonda phrases her argument like that, it's hard to disagree! - promoted by LiberalLucy)

I think it is time for Governor Granholm to use the bully pulpit of her office to speak directly to the people of Michigan.

I heard former State Rep. Maxine Berman say that all the Governor needs is $40 from each of us.  When I talk to my friends and neighbors about it, they ask "Is that all?"

And I'm not talking to just Dems.  That has been the across the board response.  Some even say they would offer to pay more to cover those that couldn't afford it.  Others say they would pay more if it would help their schools.

Mackinaw Center Guru Lives On Another Planet: Letter to the Morning Sun

by: jtcaldwell

Wed Apr 18, 2007 at 23:12:16 PM EDT

On Tuesday, February 13, the Morning Sun ran an editorial by Jack McHugh. McHugh works for the Mackinaw Center for Public Policy, a conservative "think tank" that was very supportive of John Engler's administration. In case you have forgotten, Engler left the state with a four-billion dollar deficit, a school-funding system that never worked, and did what he could to remove government regulations for business?that John Engler, remember? Curiously, the Mackinaw Center never challenged Engler's poor management, but has done nothing but challenge Jennifer Granholm's efforts to clean up Engler's financial mess

iPods for Michigan Schoolchildren... Please tell me this isn't true

by: yourexhalekiss

Sat Apr 07, 2007 at 12:56:10 PM EDT

From http://news.com.com/...

It was President Herbert Hoover who campaigned on the promise of prosperity under his administration when he vowed "a chicken in every pot, a car in every garage."

Michigan state Democrats want to do him one better: an iPod for every child. An unsigned editorial in The Detroit News is, to put it mildly, not a fan. "An iPod for every kid? Are they !#$!ing idiots?" the headline screams.

I'm a Democrat, but this just makes me sad... Rest of text after the break.

Engler tax hikes

by: ScottyUrb

Thu Feb 08, 2007 at 02:08:07 AM EST

(Here's something that I think our friends on the other side of the fence could stand to keep in mind and as they start to moan and wail.... - promoted by LiberalLucy)

It looks like Jenny will have to increase taxes for the first time in her governorship. As I recall, however, her predecessor raised taxes on more than one occasion. Three examples come to mind:

An increase in the sales tax from 4% to 6% in his first term;
A four-cent gas tax hike in 1997;
A $.50 jump in the cigarette tax in 2002.

A couple years before Johnny left office, the MDP had a page on its website about Engler's many tax and fee hikes. If anyone has that list or a similar one - or if you remember other Engler tax hikes besides the ones I mentioned - share liberally!

Making Michigan's Tax Woes Personal

by: jtcaldwell

Fri Jan 26, 2007 at 20:47:00 PM EST

As Governor Granholm struggles with the enormous deficit caused by the Republicans and a struggling economy, it is easy to point fingers and raise our voices in arguing over fault and solutions. On the other hand, lowering voices and initiating a conversation that makes complicated issues personal and understandable is more difficult.
